Sick of being overwhelmed by all the #BlackFriday deal emails, posts, and ads? So am I. Let's take a moment to reflect on the environmental impact of this day. Every year, Black Friday contributes to 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, with millions of products manufactured and purchased, often ending up in landfills shortly after. These deals encourage a 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲, where items are bought on impulse and quickly discarded. This not only leads to excessive waste but also strains our planet's resources. Consider these facts: 𝟭. 𝗙𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗘𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: The fashion industry is responsible for 10% of global carbon emissions and nearly 20% of wastewater. 𝟮. 𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲: 80% of items purchased on Black Friday end up in landfill. 𝟯. 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗘𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: Black Friday deliveries generate an estimated 429,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases each year. 𝟰. 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Plastic fibers from fast fashion are polluting oceans and wastewater. 𝟱. 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻: If everyone consumed resources at the rate of OECD and EU countries, resources from the equivalent of 3.3 planet Earths would be needed. This year, TWENTYFAIRSEVEN wants to highlight brands that are making a difference by choosing not to participate in Black Friday. If your brand is dedicated to sustainability and ethical practices, we'd love to feature you. Let's inspire others to make responsible choices and protect our planet. Get in touch with us if your brand aligns with these values and is not participating in Black Friday. Together, we can drive meaningful change! #twentyfairseven #fashionmagazine #sustainablefashion #localfashion #ethicalfashion #fairfashion #blackfriday #greenfriday #buynothingday

Black Friday brings great deals and steep discounts, especially in the clothing sector. But behind the biggest shopping event of the year lie blatant human rights violations, unfair and unsafe working conditions, environmental damage, overproduction and lack of accountability, all disguised with aggressive marketing techniques. As consumers, we have the right to ask for the real story behind our clothing and demand transparency from fashion brands. This Black Friday, we invite you to take a moment to reflect before buying: 🧶 What’s in these clothes? Are the materials sustainable? Are they polluting our planet? How can I extend the lifespan of what I wear? 👩🏾🏭 Who made these clothes? Were they produced in fair and safe working conditions across the supply chain? 💸 How are these clothes sold? Are brands using greenwashing or socialwashing tactics to mislead me about their environmental and social impact? The European Union has made strides toward holding the fashion industry accountable, and this year, you may notice products claiming to be made sustainably and ethically. But there’s still a long way to go. As we enter a new legislative cycle, along with Changing Markets Foundation, Clean Clothes Campaign, ECOS, Fashion Revolution, European Environmental Bureau, industriAll Europe, and RREUSE - Reuse and Recycling European Union Social Enterprises, we are demanding stronger commitments in the EU Textile Strategy. Together, we want to ensure that all Europeans can take pride in what they wear - knowing their clothing is made with respect for both environmental and social justice. Have a look at our demands to find out how we are pushing for green and social ambition in EU textiles policies: https://lnkd.in/eJjCQ-sw

🚨 Is Your Fashion Business Ready for Black Friday? 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eWrH2eWD 🗓️ Black Friday is just around the corner, but beyond the sales frenzy lies a critical issue... textile waste. 📦 Overproduction and clearance sales have created a waste crisis in the fashion industry that leads to 70% of fashion textiles in the UK ending up in landfills. There’s a more secure and sustainable way to clear out surplus stock: textile destruction. 🌍 In our latest blog, we explain how Avena’s sustainable destruction service helps retailers remanufacture and repurpose unsold stock, turning items into further life products. It’s an eco-friendly alternative to landfill or incineration, aligning with your sustainability goals and supporting a circular economy. 🤔 If you’re planning your Black Friday strategy, make sure you have a secure end of life solution in place for your garments. #Sustainability #TextileRecycling #CircularEconomy #FashionWaste #EcoFriendly #BlackFriday2024 #SustainableClearance

As we approach Black Friday, it’s crucial to reflect on the darker side of this shopping frenzy—textile waste and pollution.😱 The fashion industry is a major contributor to environmental damage, with estimates showing it accounts for up to 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Every year, millions of tons of textile waste end up in landfills, and the demand for "fast fashion" only intensifies the problem. As consumers, we can make a difference by choosing to buy less, supporting sustainable brands, and embracing the principles of reuse and upcycling. Let’s prioritise the planet and make conscious choices for you and your environment🌍 #SustainableFashion #TextileWaste #BlackFriday #CircularEconomy

Close the gap With Black Friday in full swing and consumption at a high, it’s a good time to reflect on why so many of us struggle to make more ethical purchasing decisions, even when we want to. There’s a term for this: the attitude-behaviour gap — the disconnect between what how we want to act and how we actually act. When it comes to fashion, the main barriers to closing this gap are price and convenience. We know the negative impacts of fast fashion — from environmental harm to exploitation — yet it can be hard to resist fast fashion when ethical alternatives feel out of reach. For students especially, affordability and convenience often outweigh ethical considerations, can you blame them? At Hazaar, we’re working to make circular consumption accessible to students by focusing on reducing price and convenience barriers, because that’s where we’ll see real change. What do you see as the biggest barrier stopping you from switching to more sustainable clothing? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Let’s work together to close the gap. 🌍 #blackfriday #consciousconsumption #circulareconomy

Black Friday is evolving from a day of rampant consumerism into a platform for meaningful sustainability initiatives, thanks to brands like Currys, IKEA, Patagonia, Lush, and Vestiaire Collective, among others. These companies are using the day to promote eco-consciousness, waste reduction, and ethical consumer choices. Currys is championing "Green Friday" with discounts on energy-efficient appliances and free recycling services for old electronics, making sustainability accessible. Meanwhile, IKEA’s Buy Back initiative allows customers to return old furniture for resale, supporting their ambitious goal to become fully circular by 2030. In the Netherlands, The Swapshop organizes large-scale clothing swaps, encouraging participants to exchange garments instead of buying new ones, tackling textile waste directly. Patagonia continues its trailblazing environmental efforts by donating all Black Friday profits to ecological causes, highlighting the value of durable and repairable clothing. Similarly, Lush opts out of discounts, donating proceeds from limited-edition items to fight overconsumption and support grassroots initiatives. For luxury fashion, Vestiaire Collective advocates "conscious shopping," emphasizing the value of pre-owned items to extend the lifecycle of high-end fashion. These inspiring examples show how Black Friday can serve as a force for good, proving that sustainability and profitability can coexist. 👚 🏷️ ⚡ 💡 📦 🌍 💚 💻 🚀 Come and read our latest blog post about Black Friday / Cyber Monday and how we fight against overconsumption with circular models in fashion reverse logistics Link to blog: https://lnkd.in/dbEuiVaa
🌍 Rethinking #BlackFriday and #CyberMonday: From #Overconsumption to #Circular Opportunities 🌍 Black Friday and Cyber Monday remain iconic retail moments, but their environmental costs are undeniable. According to Adobe Analytics, consumers spent $22 billion online during Black Friday weekend, with an additional $9 billion on Cyber Monday. However, the fashion industry, responsible for 2% to 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions and consuming 215 trillion liters of water annually, continues to face mounting scrutiny for its environmental toll. In her The Business of Fashion article “Consumers Showed Up on Black Friday Ready to Shop”, Malique Morris revealed how brands navigated deep discounts to meet consumer demands, with online shopping increasing by 8% year-over-year. Efforts to combat overconsumption are gaining traction globally. As reported in UNEP-WCMC’s Textile Initiative, designers at #Eco Fashion Week Africa showcased upcycled fashion, turning tablecloths into trousers and curtains into jackets. Spanish brand ECOALF took a stand against Black Friday by releasing a #documentary on Chile’s Atacama Desert, a shocking reminder of the waste caused by fast fashion. As Ecoalf CMO Alvarez-Ossorio Carolina said: "What does a ‘good deal’ really mean when it comes at the expense of the planet and vulnerable communities?" In Vogue Business’ article by Bella Webb, initiatives like Vestiaire Collective’s collaboration with The Or Foundation were highlighted for promoting upcycling and resale. Elizabeth (Liz) Ricketts, co-founder of The Or Foundation, emphasized: "The overconsumption habits that drive Black Friday are pervasive year-round, fueled by brands." Meanwhile, VEJA’s Repair Friday, featured in Vogue Business, saw the French trainer brand offer free repairs across product categories, reinforcing circularity’s growing appeal. Veja co-founder SEBASTIEN KOPP shared: "Sometimes, just cleaning the shoes can make people fall in love again, and that’s exactly what we’re trying to achieve." As consumer preferences shift, CIRQUEL’s mission stands for: ✅ Localized Circularity ✅ Revenue from Returns ✅ Post-Holiday Solutions As Elisa Tonda, Chief of Resources and Markets Branch at UNEP, noted: "The fashion industry has huge power to encourage solutions for lower environmental impact, supporting reuse, upcycling, repairs, and rental." A big thank you to Beam and BEUMER Group for championing our journey toward circular solutions. 💡 Join the Circular Revolution Visit our website to read the full blog post and discover how CIRQUEL is redefining the lifecycle of fashion. https://lnkd.in/ddNUfpPa Anna Warchalowska June Arrieta Jesper Bang-Olsen #CircularEconomy #SustainableFashion #BlackFriday #Overconsumption #Ecoalf #VestiaireCollective #UNEP #VogueBusiness #ResaleRevolution #Beam #BeumerGroup #FashionCircularity
