Yesterday was the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, highlighting the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities. In Nigeria, societal pressures and stigmas around marriage often add to these challenges. Despite this, many have built strong, loving relationships, demonstrating resilience. Understanding their marital experiences is crucial for creating inclusive policies that uphold their rights and foster a more equitable society.

Yesterday marked the observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, a day dedicated to raising awareness and fostering understanding about the challenges faced by people with disabilities worldwide. With a focus on Nigeria, it's important to closely examine the marital status of Nigerians living with disabilities, as this aspect provides valuable insight into their social interactions and the level of inclusion they experience in society. Many individuals with disabilities in Nigeria face unique societal pressures and cultural expectations when it comes to marriage, often contending with misconceptions and stigmatization. Despite these significant challenges, there are inspiring stories of couples who have not only navigated societal norms but have also overcome obstacles to form strong and supportive partnerships. These stories highlight resilience and the capacity for love and companionship beyond societal barriers. Understanding the marital dynamics of this community is crucial for developing comprehensive policies and programs that effectively support their rights, enhance their social experiences, and promote inclusivity in all aspects of life, thus paving the way for a more equitable society.

It's December 3rd - the International Day of Person's with Disabilities. The theme this year is " Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future" How can this be achieved? -Include them in the work force to achieve an inclusive one thereby creating a sustainable future. - Let their voices matter in decision-making - Give them leadership roles - Ensure there's no stigmatization - Accessibility is a right to people living with disabilities. Make it happen and make life easier. - Promote their right and well-being There have been sensitizations and advocacy (and there will still be today), it would be nice if these can lead to actions particularly in Nigeria. It is pretty difficult for people living with physical disabilities to use commercial buses or go for shopping. Infrastructural facilities too are not adequate. Government, communities and individuals should work in synergy to ensure this underserved community is catered for. Remember also that disability comes in various forms. Some seen, some unseen. So be humane in your dealings and do not be too quick to judge. The narrative is changing but we can do better, so let's all join hands to achieve this.

If you'll allow me to add that this weak implementation also applies to international #NGO or local #CSO, who often have the policies but don't know how to implement inclusive programming. And thus fail to adhere to their own principles (e.g. #leavenoonebehind #CRPD Art. 11 and 32). #inclusion #SDG #Agenda2030
In this opinion piece I argue that good laws have not translated into better life for persons with disabilities in the African continent. I recently attended a conference by the AFRICAN DISABILITY FORUM (ADF) and among the remarkable things discussed is the recent coming into force of the African Disability Protocol (ADP). Adopted in January 2018, the ADP officially entered into force on 5th June 2024, following its 15th ratification on 5th May 2024. The ADP offers a framework to safeguard the human rights of persons with disabilities on the continent. The continent is home to more than 80 million people with diverse disabilities who are confronted with diverse barriers to their inclusion in communities. ‘We have good laws but little implementation,’ is a sentiment that was echoed by many delegates from across different countries. For the purpose of promoting inclusion, independence, and empowerment, people with disabilities must make effective use of information and communication technologies (ICTs). Adoption of technology is important for enabling people with disabilities to have access to ICTs. Their inclusion in the digital economy, and their social inclusion and empowerment. Technology adoption activities help create a more equal and barrier-free society for all people, regardless of their skills or impairments, by promoting accessible, inclusive, and user-friendly ICT settings. Had a great read from the article by Research ICT Africa who explored the barriers to access in the use of ICTs by persons with disabilities in South Africa.
What are the barriers to access in the use of ICTs by persons with disabilities in South Africa? This research report, commissioned by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, is the result of a thorough assessment of the use of, access to, and accessibility of ICTs for persons with disabilities. The report also offers short, medium, and long-term policy advice to improve access: https://lnkd.in/dYMANdPV

I wrote this piece with Philip Ode after a recent visit to Nigeria, reflecting on the gap between the call for meaningful engagement with Organisations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs) in international cooperation and the current realities and experiences of OPDs in Nigeria. Authentic engagement with persons with disabilities and their representative organisations was one of the themes of the #GlobalDisabilitySummit2022. It is a major priority across the sector. And yet the current reality for Nigerian OPD leaders is very different. Meaningful engagement with the disability movement is not an optional extra but a prerequisite to ensuring an inclusive world.
“Meaningful engagement of persons with disabilities through their representative organisations is not an optional extra but a prerequisite to ensuring an inclusive world.” David Bainbridge, Executive Director, CBM Global In his blog, David discusses the disparity between the commitment towards meaningful engagement with Organisations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs) in international cooperation and the present-day challenges faced by OPDs in Nigeria. https://lnkd.in/gar_GdbW

Persons with disabilities have encounter many human rights abuses resulting in their exclusion and isolation from mainstream society. Since the adoption of the UNCRPD( United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities) women, men, girls and boys are no longer seen as objects in need of care but rather subjects with human rights entitled to participate with others on an equal basis in all areas of life. The CRPD creates obligations for governments. Rich and poor, to ensure that persons with disabilities benefit from développement outcomes. It also ensure that during times of risk and insecurity all persons with disabilities are provided with protection, rescue and shelter. In order for progress to be made, collaboration by all actors in développement, government, civil society and persons with disabilities is required. #disabilityinclusionadvocate. #inclusionofpersonswithdiabilities #barbarangeahachwe.
