🌬️ As you know, DEM-AWE project, showcases a groundbreaking application of #AirborneWindEnergy that’s nearing market readiness: a kite-powered battery energy storage system (K-BESS) being developed and demonstrated by Kitepower in Mayo County Council, 🇮🇪. 🪁 But, first, going to the root... do you actually know how #AWE systems work? Let´s find out more together! 💡 #AWE systems are transforming the way we harness wind power by accessing high-altitude winds, above 300 meters, where they are stronger and more consistent. This allows for more reliable and efficient energy production. 📝 The most common #AWE technology uses a kite tethered to a ground station to generate electricity in cycles. Here’s how it works: 🔹 Phase 1: Reel-out: The kite ascends in a figure-eight pattern, capturing maximum wind energy. This phase lasts around 80 seconds. 🔹 Phase 2: Reel-in: The kite is reeled back in, consuming only about 20% of the energy produced during reel-out. This 20-second cycle keeps energy generation efficient. #AWE systems use crosswind motion for higher energy output and optimised tether control.
