Despite its empowering potential, digital media also presents risks and challenges that can hinder social change efforts. One of the most significant risks is the creation of echo chambers. Social media algorithms and filter bubbles can reinforce individuals' existing beliefs and preferences, limiting exposure to diverse perspectives and contributing to polarization. The rapid spread of fake news, conspiracy theories, and propaganda on digital media platforms can undermine trust in institutions, distort public discourse, and fuel social divisions. The lack of gatekeepers and fact-checking mechanisms in the digital space makes it easier for false information to circulate unchecked, leading to confusion, mistrust, and societal harm. #digital media

Social Media: Impact on Society and Transformation in Communication Social media has made our lives easier. It is now easier than ever to access information and different voices. But there are also disadvantages: Real-life communication is diminishing. We start to see only our own opinions instead of different ones. Misinformation can spread quickly. The solution? 🛑 Should Social Media Be a Utility? 🛑 Social media platforms have evolved into something far more powerful than just tools for connection. They have become the gatekeepers of information—deciding what content we see, what voices are heard, and often, what truths are allowed to surface. 📲💬 But here’s the issue: Social media companies act as publishers, not utilities. They edit, censor, and curate content based on their interests and policies, shaping our worldview in the process. 🤔🔍 In a world where information is power, should these platforms have the ability to control what we know? I believe social media should function as a utility—a neutral platform that ensures access to information without interference, bias, or censorship. Let’s rethink the role of these tech giants and demand more transparency and fairness. It’s time to stop editing the truth. 🔑 #MarkStross #SocialMediaReform #DigitalRights #TechForGood #Transparency #FreedomOfInformation #TechEthics #DigitalFuture #Censorship #DigitalBillOfRights

Good read on the impact of social media on power dynamics - it is perhaps missing some lines on algorithms & their influence on decision making as well as their impact on shaping interactions with content & other users -, still a good read though: "One of the most significant transformations brought about by 5th Generation digital revolution is the democratization of media. Gone are the days when journalists, writers, and authors were beholden to publishers for the dissemination of their work. In the past, media outlets operated within a framework of governmental control, wherein decisions regarding the publication or censorship of news were often dictated by vested interests of the publishers, media houses and government agencies. Through social media users-generated contents, ordinary citizens can now share their perspectives, experiences, and insights with a global audience instantaneously. The era of gatekeeping by mainstream media, establishment and governmental agencies is gradually giving way to a new era of decentralized information dissemination. In an era marked by increasing threats to democratic norms and institutions, social media has emerged as a vigorous force for safeguarding democratic principles and promoting transparency and accountability in governance".
