Effective EPR systems come down to the right perspective on what creates the greatest impact, according to Reid Lifset, research scholar at Yale University, who spoke at the Packaging Recycling Summit today in Anaheim, Ca. “We talk about increasing recycling and sometimes about increasing reuse, and we talk about avoiding landfilling, but looking at the science behind this, we know that the majority of the benefit of recycling and reuse comes not from avoiding landfilling, it comes from displacing primary production. When you use recycled content in lieu of primary content, typically less energy is used and that’s where the major benefit comes from. This focus on landfill diversion is something we say to the public because it’s easier to understand, but it doesn’t completely or accurately represent what’s going on,” says Lifset. “What we want to do is reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and so we should be designing our systems to minimize emissions, not to minimize landfill. 🌍 Excited to share my insights in the latest Packaging Europe report, thanks to Victoria Hattersley! 🚀 We delved into the progress of reuse at INC-4, highlighting Option 1.1's powerful approach with binding global standards and time-bound targets for reusable alternatives to single-use plastics. 🌱 BUT here's the catch: the discussion of reuse was unfortunately bundled with recycling, missing the chance to shine as a standalone solution to reduce virgin plastic and boost the circular economy. ♻️ To truly make reuse work, I emphasized the need for financial mechanisms to make reuse competitive — think government grants and tax incentives. 💰 And of course, I couldn't NOT mention EPR...let's not forget that a robust Extended Producer Responsibility policy should push businesses towards reusable packaging. The big takeaway? To scale reuse and refill, businesses need government support.
