GROWING PUSH TO RECYCLE THE PILBARA 44,000 TONNES OF MINING TYRE WASTE LOCALLY Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Pilbara / By Rosemary Murphy Posted 16h ago16 hours ago The Shire of Ashburton is commissioning a feasibility study into the potential for a tyre recycling facility near Onslow IN SHORT: ➡️ An estimated 49 per cent of all waste mining tyres in Australia come from WA's Pilbara region. ➡️ That equates to about 44,000 tonnes off-the-road (OTR) tyres requiring disposal each year. WHAT'S NEXT? 'A specialised OTR tyre recycler is expected to open in Port Hedland by the end of the year. 'They power the Australian economy, but the gigantic tyres on the hundreds of trucks working across the mines of Western Australia's Pilbara are also proving a significant disposal challenge. 'With the region accounting for close to half of the country's mining tyre waste, most end up buried, stockpiled on site or sent to landfill, nearly 44,000 tonnes of tyres used each year. 'That's almost five times the next highest area of Bowen Basin in Queensland and close to six times the amount of the New South Wales Hunter region, which has the third highest rate. 'Plans are now underway to ensure more of them can be recycled locally.' Altilium meets with Bulgarian officials at the UK Ambassador's Residence in Sofia to update our Medet integrated critical minerals recycling project, giving EU industrial resilience. ♻️ Our Medet recycling hub (ACT 3) will be a one-stop-shop for critical minerals in the European region, including copper, nickel, lithium, and cobalt. ♻️ The 2,200-hectare Medet copper tailings project in central-west Bulgaria is not a mining venture, but an innovative waste-to-value facility. Here we will recycle copper from old mine waste essential for EV batteries, electric motors and charging infrastructure, significantly bolstering Europe's future battery industry. ♻️ On the same site, we will retrofit a brownfield SX-EW Plant to recycle old EV batteries and production scrap from Eastern Europe. A battery recycling circuit will be integrated into its existing leaching refinery and will process battery waste from 24,000 EVs per year. Incremental capital costs to modify the flowsheet to treat end-of-life electric vehicle batteries is substantially lower than a greenfield project. ♻️ There are few environmentally friendly options to recycle lithium-ion scrap in Europe given the capital expenditure required and the permitting timeline associated with building a hydrometallurgical facility such as ours, giving Altilium a source of competitive advantage in the rapidly growing Eastern European raw materials supply chain. ♻️ By transforming waste such as mine tailings and old batteries into valuable resources, we're paving the way for low carbon, domestic sources of battery materials for the electrification of transport.

The Bauxite Boom: A Call for Responsible Mining 🌿 Mighty Earth's latest report, "The Impact of the Bauxite Boom on People and the Planet," sheds light on the significant environmental and social impacts of bauxite mining, particularly for aluminum used in electric vehicles (EVs). 🌍 The European Union is taking a significant step towards achieving its goal of becoming carbon-neutral by 2050 with the new Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA). Proposed by the European Commission, the CRMA aims to reduce the bloc's reliance on foreign players, including China, and diversify supply chains. 🛡️ The act establishes 34 critical and 17 strategic raw materials as "crucial" for the green and digital transitions, as well as for the defence and space industries. It sets three targets for the EU's annual consumption of raw materials: 10% for local extraction, 40% to be processed in the EU and 25% to come from recycled materials. 🌱 This legislation is a significant step in the right direction for Europe's green transition. Last year, Rio Tinto completed the creation of a new #aluminium #recycling joint venture with Canada-based Giampaolo Group Inc.. Our Matalco Inc. JV opens a new world of possibilities for Rio Tinto, giving us access to 900,000 tonnes of recycled aluminium capacity per year. This adds approximately 45% capacity to our North American aluminium portfolio, with more space to grow. With customers increasingly looking for ways to reduce the #carbonfootprint of their products, we will continue to see higher demand for recycled aluminium. Think about it: producing one tonne of recycled aluminium emits only 5% of the greenhouse gases generated to produce one tonne of primary aluminium. That's a big gain for the planet!
