Did you know it has been 10 years since Australia's voluntary national product stewardship scheme for tyres was established? With 16 tyre brands now invested in Tyre Stewardship Australia, there are more rubber recycling opportunities opening up across the country than ever before. Through recycling, old tyres are made into products such as flooring, asphalt, mats and pavement. Clean Up Australia would like to see the tyre stewardship scheme made mandatory, with 100% of tyre importers and auto brands contributing – keeping tyres out of landfill and off our streets! Tyre Stewardship Australia has been supporting key  research undertaken by the University of Adelaide into the role of stewardship and how it can improve sustainable outcomes in the automotive industry.  The report has now been published, and among its findings it states that "more attention is needed to creating a circular economy to reduce the use of new materials and to recover resources.” The report also noted the importance of closing the gap between academic research and business practices. This report further strengthens TSA's belief that circular economy is key to improving sustainable outcomes across the automotive industry. This is particularly true when it comes to end-of-life tyres, which in Australia represent a loss of millions of tonnes of useful and valuable materials every year." Each year, 850,000 vehicles reach their end-of-life in Australia. The Automotive Parts Recyclers Association of Australia (APRAA) and Motor Trades Association of Australia (MTAA) have recently launched the ‘The Outlook for End-of-Life Vehicles in Australia’ report. This comprehensive study reveals a pathway for boosting automotive recycling through a product stewardship scheme. The report draws on detailed research delivered jointly by the MTAA and the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI). One of the largest motor vehicle studies of its type undertaken in Australia, the research identified options to enhance end-of-life vehicle (ELV) material recovery rates, avoid inter-state leakage and reduce vehicle waste destined for landfill. Industry now propose to work together to explore a co-regulatory product stewardship scheme with government including initiatives such as: ♻️ Authorised collection and treatment facilities 📜 Certificates of Destruction (CoD) 🌏 National consistency Access the report here: https://lnkd.in/gNQs48bC

So what tyres will be collected by Tyrewise? The Waste Minimisation (Tyres) Regulations 2023 cover all pneumatic (air-filled) and solid tyres for use on motorised vehicles, including cars, trucks, buses, motorcycles, aircraft, trailers, and off-road vehicles. Tyres for most agricultural machinery are also included. Don't worry, though, we're also working on a plan to include bicycle tyres, tyres for non-motorised equipment such as prams, and pre-cured rubber for retreads at a later stage.
