I love Dan Pink (and Churchill quotes), but this is nonsense that we need to address. Even Facebook has ditched "fail fast". ❌Failure on its own is wasteful and destroys value. Serial failure (and celebrating it) is a version of Einstein's definition of insanity. ❌Experimentation (learning) from "failure" is the scientific method, however, testing low quality hypotheses is also wasteful. ✅Learning from setbacks in pursuit of quality hypotheses and the will to persevere despite those setbacks is vital to success. The contrast should be painfully clear and yet we continue to try and celebrate failure as if failure alone will do anything other than provide the least likely path to success. Failure is not progress towards anything. Intentional Learning (new insights) is.

This is so true, especially in safety. We could also include fatigue. But these are not "sins". They are part of being human. Rather than refer to it as "laziness" which doesn't help anyone, why not acknowledge what the neuroscience shows and help people deal with doing things in autopilot (without much thinking, if any at all). From the outside, it looks like laziness or complacency, but that's just the tag we give it. The solution is not to control the world around us so we never get impatient, fatigued or complacent. Getting people to try to continuously think about safety is not much of a solution either because the human brain just doesn't work that way. The solution is to teach people how to recognize these human functionalities asap and get them to apply techniques that minimize their impact at that time.

Consistency is important in almost all areas of organizational structure. And it’s far from easy to accomplish. It requires tracking, measurement and clarity of expectations.

Some leaders think “honking” at problems or people will fix the issue or motivate the individual. It doesn’t work (not long term, anyway). It’s just irritating. It’s a great way to ensure employee disengagement and turnover. Instead of talking like you naturally talk but louder, try yielding to the style, preferences and motivators of other “traffic” (people). Doesn’t cost you an ounce of compromise of the goals or standards. Only escalates your influence to achieve the outcomes through the alignment and engagement of others.

Love it Daniel! This is the human connection side of Dr. Robert Cialdini's persuasion principle of Liking. My personal perspective has 3 parts. 1 ) We like people like us. ( Straight from Cialdi ) 2 ) We like to be liked by other people. It feels good. 3 ) We like to like other people. It feels good. But Daniel's quote really gets to the heart of it. That similarly needs to be true & authentic to really connect whether it's with strangers, customers or loved ones. tim #bgreen🌏 P.S. Sleazy marketers & salespeople who lie & fake similarly deserve to fail & we should help them do so. Cialdi himself talks about outing unethical sellers in his book Influence, New and Expanded: The Psychology of Persuasion. Call out false friends trying to sell you. It's they who make us trust everyone, & every word less.
