"𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮, 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗼𝗿 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹?” Is it a ride, winning a prize at a game of chance, or food? 𝘙𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘳 𝘤𝘰𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴 – that’s what I plan my trip around at an amusement park such as Disney or Six Flags. I’m a fan of the older coasters without corkscrews or loops, I ride these as well. The iconic Cyclone at Coney Island in Brooklyn, NY is my all-time favorite, but Space Mountain at Disney is a split-hair behind (mostly because of the travel and planning required). My second favorite ride - 𝘸𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘴𝘭𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘴. I had an experience in Reykjavík, Iceland that I can recall with total clarity after only one visit. It was over July 4th weekend no less. The best way to describe it is a ride in your bathing suit on water inside Disney’s Space Mountain. It was fully enclosed and used light and darkness to create misdirection so you expected to go Right but were taken Left, etc. Is your career pivot journey taking you on a water slide with darkness and light? "Our family used to hop in the station wagon and visit our cousins for a week every summer in Palm Beach." This might appear as a pretty generic, uneventful story about someone's childhood. However, when you are connecting, take a magnifying glass to a sentence like this, and examine what you learn. You learned: 1. This person took vacations with their family. 2. This person lived in driving distance to Palm Beach. 3. This person had a family who owned a station wagon. 4. This person was close enough with their extended family to visit them annually (at least). 5. This person has been to the beach/ocean. 6. This person can tolerate travel with others. What else could we be missing? This could prompt you to ask: 1. How many of you were in the car? 2. Who drove? 3. What side of your family are your cousins on? 4. What else is in Palm Beach? This list goes on. We're connecting all the time, and we can always keep looking at what we're learning.

Fabulous two days shadowing Celine, a SHiFT Guide at Bexley, meeting two children she has worked with for the last 18-months. I spent half a day with each child, spending time in their local area, eating lunch, and getting to know them. In the fast-paced world of bid-writing and the need for quick turnarounds in evaluation, this type of deep, close work with practitioners can often be over-looked. However, I would urge all evaluators to find the time. At SHiFT it has provided space to get ‘under the skin’ of the intervention, really understanding what the ‘SHiFT difference’ is and which aspects of the support is most meaningful to the children and their families. This depth of understanding has also proved invaluable to building appropriate research infrastructure. Good data comes from processes that are simple, easy to engage with, and coherent. This can only be achieved when you give the time to do the work to understand what is happening on the ground. I would urge all evaluators to take time for immersion. Build in a few days to simply ‘be’ in the field. Talk to people, take notes, conduct interviews, watch what is happening. And then, build the infrastructure. The fruits of this labour are coming to bear in SHiFT as we develop strong QA/QI processes in a constant pursuit of best practice.

Memorial Day the unofficial start of summer; which means beach days and beach reads. Every summer I decided to take a break …I means summer vacation has to exist on some level; am I right? So, I pick out 3-6 books to read, complete and implement in my life on some level. I have three categories: management/work , personal growth and summertime sizzle (aka trash reads) I’m starting the summer thinking of work so might as well start with a “work” book. This month read is by Kim Scott’s Radical Candor …a solid read (thus far…I’m only on page 55) with practical easy to implement changes to assist me in becoming the leader I want to be. A colleague asked me to describe my management style in three words. My answer was complicated but fell inline with my general core values which are Compassion, Empathy and Passion. I take that into my management style as well. (Yes…compassion and empathy are two distinct things ) I can be understanding without being a pushover; and I am now in a point of my career that I LOVE what I do; and I want to do not only good no GREAT work but with empathy and compassion. Working with people is a gift and I have the fortune to work with some of the most gifted folks in the business of entertainment television. Let’s remember , we may not be in the same boat, but we are all in the same waters.
