Dubai’s Al Maktoum International Airport, also known as Dubai World Central (DWC), is set to become a sprawling mega hub that will eventually cater to all the Gulf carrier’s needs. Here are some key details about this ambitious project: Expansion and Investment: The airport has been open since 2010, initially serving cargo services before adding passenger flights three years later. Phase two of development involves an AED 128 billion (AUD$53.3b) investment and expansion project. Once complete, the 70 square-kilometre complex will be five times the size of the current Dubai International Airport (DXB). It will cater to up to 260 million passengers across five terminals. The goal is for all DXB operations, including those of Emirates, FlyDubai, and other international carriers, to relocate to the new facility within the next ten years1. Future-Proof Design: Al Maktoum International has been designed for the future. It takes into account the rapid changes in aviation technology. The airport anticipates a shift towards narrow-bodied aircraft, which will play a pivotal role in air travel. While the Airbus A380 superjumbo once held pride of place, more efficient, smaller aircraft are now leading the way. The economics of these smaller planes are better due to advancements in engine and airframe technology. Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, emphasizes that the future lies in smaller, more efficient aircraft2. Dubai’s Vision: His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum envisions this project as a city around the airport. It will host leading companies in logistics and air transport sectors. Dubai aims to be the world’s airport, port, urban hub, and new global center. This investment ensures continuous and stable development for future generations1. In summary, Al Maktoum International Airport represents Dubai’s commitment to staying at the forefront of aviation, embracing technological advancements, and providing a world-class experience for travelers. #AviationGeek #Boeing #Airbus #NarrowBodyJet #EfficientAircraft #AviationPhotography #AirportLife #MegaHub #WingView #SkyHigh #cloudscape #Takeoff #landing #DubaiWorldCentral #AlMaktoumAirport #DXB #Emirates #FlyDubai #FutureOfTravel

Dubai International (IATA: DXB, ICAO: OMDB) Airport is the main airport serving Dubai as well as the principal airport of UAE. DXB is not only listed among the busiest airports in the world when it comes to passenger traffic, but it also serves the most international passengers in the world. It is estimated that 1 plane flies from DBX every 76 seconds. It is also the 2nd-busiest airport in the world by passenger traffic, the busiest airport for Airbus A380 & Boeing 777 movements & the airport with the highest average number of passengers per flight. In 2023, the airport handled 87 million passengers, 1.81 million tons of cargo & registered 416,405 aircraft movements. From 2006-2014, I was involved in security consultancy work for DBX's Terminal 3, Cargo Mega Terminal as well as for the various modifications & many additions. Terminal 3 was completed & opened on 14 Oct 2008 in 4 seperate phases to avoid crashing the baggage handling & other IT systems. Terminal 3 was the largest building in the world by floor area & is currently the world's largest airport terminal, with over 1,713,000 m2 of space. A large part of Terminal 3 is located under the taxiway area & directly connected to Concourse B: the departure & arrival halls in the new structure are 10m beneath the airport's apron. Terminal 3 boasts a multi level underground structure, first & business class lounges, restaurants, 180 check-in counters & 2,600 car-parking spaces. The terminal offers more than double the previous retail area of Concourse C, by adding about 4,800 m2 & Concourse B's 10,700 m2 of shopping facilities. Dubai Airports’ Cargo Mega Terminal which was built on a 43,600 m2 site, with a capacity of 3 million tons per year, handles all types of cargo from one central location. This terminal has fully-automated workstations & is one of the most technologically advanced cargo terminals in the world. Dubai has another international airport, known as Dubai World Central (IATA: DWC, ICAO: OMD) Airport (Al Maktoum Airport) located in Jebel Ali, which is presently a low cost terminal. However, the authorities have repurposed DWC & designated it to be the country's new main aviation hub with a 260 million passenger capacity. When construction is fully completed, DWC is expected to be the largest in the world. When the new & much improved DWC is fully operational in about 10 years time & at an projected cost of US35 billion, DBX would likely be decommissioned. However for the time being, DWC remains the secondary airport in Dubai. The new DWC Airport is a different beast. At 5 times the size of DBX, it is slated to have 400 gates & 5 parallel runways. In the US, Chicago's O'Hare International Airport (IATA: ORD, ICAO: KORD) has 8 runways, the most runways of any civilian airport in the world. But the 8 runways are utilised at different times depending on the prevailing wind, weather, traffic & airport conditions. As of 2023, O'Hare is considered the world's most connected airport.

✈️ The Evolution of Dubai Airport: A Journey of Transformation ✈️ From its humble beginnings to becoming one of the world's busiest airports, Dubai International Airport (DXB) has undergone a remarkable transformation. 1959: The vision began with Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, who ordered the construction of an airport. By 1960, Dubai Airport opened with a compacted sand runway and a modest terminal. 1965: The airport saw its first major upgrade with a new asphalt runway and extended terminal, attracting more airlines and increasing connectivity. 1970s: The runway was extended to accommodate jumbo jets like the Boeing 747 and Concorde, marking Dubai's rise as a key refueling stop for long-haul flights. 1980s-1990s: Continuous upgrades in infrastructure, including new terminals and advanced navigational aids, positioned DXB as a major global hub. 2000s-Present: The airport expanded further with the opening of Terminal 3, dedicated to Emirates, and Concourse A, the world's first A380 facility. Today, DXB handles over 87 million passengers annually, connecting over 270 destinations worldwide. Dubai International Airport's journey is a testament to visionary leadership and relentless pursuit of excellence. It stands as a beacon of innovation and a gateway to the world. 🌍✨ #DubaiAirport #Aviation #Travel #Innovation #GlobalHub #DXB
