Nearly 4.6 million children in the U.S. have asthma and many lack access to emergency inhalers at school. Thanks to a $3.4 million grant from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, a division of the National Institutes of Health, researchers at the The University of Arizona College of Nursing and the Asthma and Airway Disease Research Center are working to expand and improve the Stock Inhaler for Schools program, providing better access to life-saving medication for students in need. “Our goal with the Stock Inhaler for Schools program is to bridge the gap in access to life-saving medications and safeguard the well-being of our youth.” said Ashley Lowe, PhD, an assistant professor at the U of A College of Nursing and member of the U of A Health Sciences Asthma and Airway Disease Research Center. Sepsis in children and young people: 2 updated guides These fully illustrated guides have been updated by Catherine Hewitt, Senior Lecturer at London South Bank University. The guides have also been double-blind peer-reviewed. – Sepsis in children and young people Part 1: Causes and recognition Part 1 of this two-part series provides an overview of the pathophysiology of sepsis, possible causes and key symptoms, and covers how to recognise children/young people at risk of deterioration. The guide also describes susceptible patient groups and the observations that should be carried out to confirm a sepsis diagnosis. – Sepsis in children and young people Part 2: Management Part 2 gives an overview of the management of sepsis in children/young people. The guide describes how to implement the ‘Sepsis Six’ care bundle in clinical practice. The Sepsis Six care bundle is a quality improvement programme, which comprises a delivery toolkit and an educational programme. It ensures the prompt recognition of severe sepsis and the delivery of six simple elements of care in a time-critical manner: • Ensure a senior clinician attends; • Give oxygen (unless contraindicated); • Obtain IV/IO access and take blood; • Give IV/IO antibiotics; • Consider inotropic support. #nursing #sepsis #paediatrics

During American Diabetes Month, I want to highlight the critical work being done by Sanitas Medical Center and Florida Health Care Plans (FHCP) to address the growing impact of diabetes in our communities. At Sanitas, their care teams offer a patient-centered approach to diabetes care, empowering individuals through personalized education, shared decision-making, and continuous follow-up that meets patients where they are. And they are focused on reducing HbA1c levels for Florida Blue members who live in communities where health disparities are more prevalent. Similarly, FHCP is offering members programs and services that focus on prevention, early detection, and management of diabetes and other conditions. Their team of Registered Nurses, Registered Dietitians, and Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialists are working together to provide comprehensive care and support to members. What's more, FHCP has developed a framework to identify patients with diabetes and is using data and analytics to drive targeted interventions and outreach to close these care gaps. These types of data-driven and collaborative approaches to chronic disease management are what’s needed to drive meaningful change in health care. By empowering patients and addressing the drivers of health, we can create a healthier, more equitable future for all. #AmericanDiabetesMonth #DiabetesCare #HealthCareOnLinkedIn

A new study found that four of five older adults (aged 50 years or older) admitted to long-term acute care hospitals either die or survive with severe functional or cognitive impairments within two and a half years after hospitalization. More than 70,000 Medicare beneficiaries receive care in long-term acute care hospitals for prolonged medical illnesses such as dependence on the ventilator after pneumonia. Very little has been known about their long-term functional and cognitive outcomes after hospitalization. This study reveals the negative health outcomes of patients in these facilities, which are relevant to a large pool of older adults who may be faced with the prospect of transferring to long-term hospitals for prolonged medical care after a critical illness. Additionally, this study highlights the need to discuss goals of care for those at risk for adverse outcomes. Learn more in the article below. https://lnkd.in/eX-DVcmf

Physicians, nurses, diabetes educators, nutritionists, I'd love to hear from you... 🏥 💟 🥑 * Does your hospital have behavioral modification programs for patients with Type 2 diabetes or a pre-diabetes diagnosis? * How about a behavior-mod program for cardiovascular patients post-surgery to help them learn/implement lifestyle changes, e.g., healthy eating, increased exercise, stress reduction, etc? * Are you tasked with implementing these programs, and do you realistically have the time to do so?? 💡 Why am I asking? I'm exploring practical, actionable solutions for ways to help fix our broken healthcare system, and I have to start one step at a time... 😅 https://lnkd.in/g9s7psh4
