Dr. Antony Otengo will focus on mangrove forests along the Kenyan coast, developing strategies for their restoration, management and conservation to improve food security, reduced coastal climate impacts, improved carbon credit, and increased biodiversity. He will also look at bee-keeping as a sustainable alternative livelihood for the local community. "I am confident that the Africa-UBC Oceans and Fisheries Visiting Fellows program will provide me with the tools, support, and inspiration needed to achieve my research goals and contribute to the broader scientific community.” https://lnkd.in/g5a2FFDJ

Looking forward meeting you all tomorrow in Brugge at 17h at the IUCN regional conference for the presentation of the Life Prognoses project: Life Prognoses project brings together leading scientists, policy-makers at the European level, and national experts in the field of forest management and conservation. We will present the results of four-year research into the characteristics of old-growth beech forests in Europe and their ecosystem services (carbon stock and biodiversity). The aim is to inform but also be an interface between science, practice and policy to establish a critical understanding of old-growth forest protection in Europe and its challenges. Presenters: Dr Kris Vandekerkhove (INBO, Belgium) on the indicators of European old-growth forests Prof. Dr Alfredo Di Filippo (Univ. Of Tuscia, Italy) on carbon stock and sequestration in European old-growth forests Dr Hanns Kirchmeir (E.C.O., Austria) on tree-related microhabitats as a proxy for biodiversity in European old-growth forests https://lnkd.in/eHSUnfsM

Excellent achievement toward preaching about our marine resources. This applicable brief should highlight how to implement Marine Spatial Planning (MSPs) which is one of the Saudi Vision 2030 goals to achieve in both the Red Sea and the Gulf.
The European Marine Board IVZW, an #OceanDecade Implementing Partner, has just released a new brief on marine habitat mapping that aims to inform policymakers, programme managers, research funders and the wider science-policy and scientific communities in the advancement of next-generation marine habitat mapping efforts. In this brief, you'll find the latest insights on: 👉 the crucial role of accurate and extensive marine habitat maps for achieving European and international goals for biodiversity, conservation, restoration and climate action. 👉 the science and policy needs to advance our understanding and documentation of marine habitats, from increasing the resolution of biological information to strengthening coordination mechanisms for interdisciplinary mapping efforts to fill critical gaps. 🐟 "Climate change is making it almost impossible to decide how much, where and what to sustainably fish as the fate of future fisheries is becoming increasingly uncertain. ... As the Arctic Ocean loses sea ice due to climate change, fisheries access is increasing, and large-scale exploitation is on the horizon. These changes threaten the fragile Arctic Ocean ecosystem that harbours polar bears, beluga whales, narwhals and a range of fish species, such as Arctic char and Greenland halibut. ... [Now] is the time to establish a proactive, precautionary and climate-informed management framework that considers the unique and fragile Arctic ecosystem — before any explorative fishery and ideally before large-scale, unregulated fishing activities." 🐟 Check out this article in The Conversation Canada from Andrea Bryndum-Buchholz, Postdoctoral Researcher in Marine Ecology and Climate-Impact Sciences, at Memorial University, Newfoundland and Labrador University of Newfoundland, to learn more about how we can support a sustainable and just future for the Arctic. 🐟 Read here: https://lnkd.in/e7eyhJQG

🌏📖 New Study: PhD student Joshua Elves-Powell and MSc Conservation student Jai Dolan, in collaboration with the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), Seoul National University, the Tiger and Leopard Conservation Fund in Korea (KTLCF), and the NINA - Norsk institutt for naturforskning, have published groundbreaking research on deforestation in North Korea. This study, featured in Regional Environmental Change, highlights cropland expansion and forest clearance near the China border, threatening critical wildlife habitats. The team, including contributors Sarah Durant, Hang Lee, and Professor Jan Axmacher, warns that ongoing forest cover removal exacerbates risks, particularly flooding and landslides during the summer rainy season, posing a significant challenge to biodiversity recovery in Korea. Marine protected areas established worldwide aim to safeguard biodiversity and support coastal ecosystem functioning.🌊 In Hong Kong, despite the operation of protected marine parks and a no-take marine reserve under legislation for many years, a comprehensive evaluation of their conservation impact is still lacking. Most studies focus solely on taxonomic diversity, overlooking functional and phylogenetic diversity.🔎 In a study led by SKLMP Director Prof. Kenneth Leung, SKLMP Member and research assistant professor Dr. Meng Yan, and her postdoc Dr. Rongjie Zhao, the team utilized environmental DNA🧬 and multifaceted diversity indicators to assess the impact of protection levels on the fish community🐟 in Hong Kong waters. The results indicate that marine protected areas contribute significantly to fish community conservation, with the no-take marine reserve exhibiting the highest diversity, and partially protected marine parks showing the most balanced community composition. There was no significant increase in fish functional diversity within the protected areas. The researchers suggest that future management of marine protected areas should consider multifaceted biological indicators for effective conservation schemes👐.

🌊 Kakhovka Dam destruction on June 6th, 2023, impacted the ecology of the entire region. Many homes were flooded, many people and animals fled. This ecocide is unprecedented in the 21st century. A year after the catastrophe, Truth Hounds and Project Expedite Justice published a report on the destruction and its impacts on ecosystems, agrarians, other civilians, and international justice. EOSDA participated in the project and provided calculations to estimate the impact of flooding. The study examines the ecocide, highlighting legal accountability, economic and agricultural consequences, environmental impacts on water, biodiversity, and soil, and human costs, including loss of life, displacement, and health risks. The new article from Greenpeace discusses the catastrophe’s background and findings from the report: https://bit.ly/4erkyMt Stay tuned for a more in-depth story of EOSDA’s contribution soon! 🕊️
