Congratulations to Professor Bantval Jayant Baliga of North Carolina State University, the Winner of the 2024 Millennium Technology Prize! This award celebrates Professor Baliga’s incredible contribution through his invention, development, and commercialization of the Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT). Since the 1980s, his innovation has been pivotal in reducing worldwide energy and petrol consumption, setting the stage for a greener, more sustainable future. For me, this isn’t just an innovation; it’s a reminder of why I do what I do. Early in my career, fresh from my PhD in electric motors and drives, I dove into software development for inverters. Seeing the incredible energy savings made possible by IGBT-powered systems was inspiring — it made technology's role in a sustainable future tangible. Today, while my focus has shifted to product leadership, IGBTs remain essential to everything from EVs to advanced maritime systems, where they help make vessels cleaner and more efficient. I see it as a full-circle moment: from my early days optimizing energy use to now driving innovative products that impact real-world sustainability. That’s the kind of legacy I aim to contribute to — solutions that make a difference. Congratulations once again to Professor Baliga for a truly transformative invention that continues to inspire the journey toward a sustainable future. ⏮️ Throwback | Quantum Night At our embassy, the Innovation 💡 Department collaborates closely with Dutch and French innovation clusters to promote bilateral and European partnerships. A good example of this is the collaboration in the field of quantum technology ⚛️. With this key technology we are on the eve of a technological revolution that can contribute to solutions for all kinds of major societal challenges, including healthcare, energy transition, secure communication and researching new materials   Both The Netherlands 🇳🇱 and France 🇫🇷 recognize the strategic importance of quantum technology and have launched joint initiatives to advance research, development and innovation in this field. The opportunity to create a new partnership came through the Finland-Colorado research collaboration call opened by CSC. 🚀 Historic Milestone for the AWARE Center: THI and FAPESP sign an Agreement for International Research Collaboration in AI, Mobility and Energy Research! 🌎   🤝 Exciting news from Ingolstadt! During a prestigious visit, THI welcomed a high-ranking delegation from FAPESP and the State Secretary, alongside the Bavarian University Center for Latin America (Bayerisches Hochschulzentrum für Lateinamerika (BAYLAT)). The discussions, led by FAPESP President Prof. Marco Antonio Zago and State Secretary Prof. Vahan Agopyan, with THI President Prof. Walter Schober and institute leaders, set the stage for future breakthroughs in mobility, energy, and safety research.   💡 Spotlight on Innovation: Presentations highlighted THI's expertise in vehicle safety research, renewable energies, hydrogen research, and AI innovations by AImotion Bayern. This partnership is poised to push boundaries in AI for mobility and production technologies, energy technologies, vehicle safety research, advanced battery systems, and passive and active safety systems.   🌱 Seeding Future Success: A significant outcome of this collaboration is the earmarking of €200,000 for a joint research initiative expected for June.   🖋️ A Pact for Progress: The signing of a framework agreement paves the way for a fruitful partnership between Bavaria and São Paulo. This collaboration not only signifies a historic moment for our work but also promises substantial contributions to the fields of mobility, energy, and safety research. #Hydrogen will be one of the main pillars of tomorrow's emission-free mobility. The key question is: how and with which technology can the enormous amount of energy contained in the smallest chemical element best be put on the road? And: How will the required quantities of hydrogen be produced and delivered to customers in the future?   Answers to these and many other questions will be provided by Biermann Bernhard from FEV in his presentation at Future Propulsion Conference, which is being held at the National Motorcycle Museum in Solihull on February 28th and 29th.   #FeelEVolution and find out which hydrogen propulsion technologies are already available, which of them work best for specific applications and learn about successful FEV developments.

✨ €20M seed funding announced – we are delivering on our vision of simulation-enabled QI stellarator design. In April 2023, we hit the ground running on both engineering optimization and high-temperature superconducting magnets to enable clean energy, for good. The new €20M funding propels us towards building the first-of-a-kind #fusion power plant, tackling the challenges of baseload energy that we need to address to meet decarbonization goals. The funding round, led by redalpine, was preempted and oversubscribed, with participation from the German government-backed DTCF | DeepTech & Climate Fonds, the Bavarian government-backed Bayern Kapital, and the Max-Planck-Förderstiftung (Max Planck Foundation). Existing investors, including Plural, UVC Partners, HTGF | High-Tech Gründerfonds, Wilbe | Home for Scientist Leaders, and TOMORROW of Visionaries Club have doubled down on their pre-seed investments. New Publication!! Our recent work on low-thermal budget #ALD grown #ferroelectric materials-based analog memories operating between room temperature down to deep cryogenic temperatures is available online (link below). In this work we show HZO-based devices are capable of working efficiently as analog memory and for #neuromorphic circuits, which lays the foundations for further developments in ArCTIC-KDT. This was the last work that I led at VTT and will now continue in more interesting trajectory at Tampere University.
