BASILICA CISTERN Istanbul, Turkey During our Mediterranean cruise, a few months ago, my wife and I visited many iconic buildings and archaeological sites in Italy, Greece and Turkey. Being our first time in Turkey, we were in awe of the magnificent sites like Ephesus and in Istanbul, Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and Topkapi. However, the Basilica Cistern was just an incredible structure that lies beneath the city of Istanbul. The cistern located 150 metres southwest of Hagia Sophia was built in the 6th century during the reign of Byzantine emperor Justinian when the city was named Constantinople. Today it is kept with little water, for public access inside the space. It is 138 metres by 65 metres in size. The weight of the cistern is carried on the columns by means of the cross – shaped vaults and round arches of its roof. Surprisingly, it was nor rediscovered until 1961. For anyone that will be going to Istanbul, I highly recommend visiting the Basilica Cistern. #architecture #iconicdesign #familytrip #travel #iconic #buildingdesign
