According to the OECD, EU plastics consumption is expected to double by 2060. This is one of the reasons why the EU‘s rules for the reuse and recycling of single-use packaging are becoming continuously stricter. At the same time, the importance of recycling keeps growing. Through the legislation, EU countries aim to significantly reduce total packaging waste, including plastic, per capita. For example, by 2029, 90% of single-use plastic and metal beverage containers will have to be collected separately, i.e. through the deposit system. However, in preparing for the growth of plastic consumption, there‘s still a long way to go — as of 2021, only 40% of plastic packaging waste in the EU was recycled. We encourage businesses to lead the transformation and choose eco-conscious recycled plastic products. Learn more about them by visiting our website: www.plastagroup.com #recycling #plastagroup

DAILY BONUS: The Plastic Industry Pushed Recycling Myth *The world produces an average of 430 million metric tons of plastic each year. *The United States alone produces tens of millions of tons of plastic waste annually. *Yet, on average, only about 5 to 6 percent of plastic in the U.S. is recycled. *NPR correspondent Michael Copley joins Ali Rogin to discuss a new report on the plastic industry’s tactics to push recycling and avoid regulation. https://lnkd.in/eSQv4SuS

Deposit refund systems are not “miracle solutions”, says Manon Richert, communications manager for Zero Waste France. “This system can certainly help improve recycling [and increase return rates], but it doesn’t target the goal we need to have: drastically reducing our production of plastic.” 🔗 https://lnkd.in/edqK2eF5 This effect has already been observed in Germany. A law passed in 2003 aimed to reduce the market share of single-use containers to 20 percent, but the opposite has occurred. According to a 2021 Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg study titled 'Intended and unintended effects of statutory deposit return schemes for single-use plastic bottles', the market share of multi-use bottles and containers dropped from 66.3% in 2004 to 41.2% in 2018, while the share of single-use bottles and containers has continuously increased. 📰 https://lnkd.in/eQdqgUNN 👋 Dr. Sebastian Rhein ∙ Katharina Friederike Sträter Collecting and recycling more bottles would increase the quantity of recycled plastic available, therefore lowering its price – “not exactly what encourages manufacturers to reduce production,” says Richert. “In the end, this measure risks maintaining the plastic production cycle, when we need to break it.” 🔗 https://lnkd.in/edqK2eF5 👋 Cyrielle Cabot ∙ Recycling Netwerk Benelux

Around the world, one million plastic bottles are purchased every minute, while up to five trillion plastic bags are used worldwide every year. Today, we produce about 400 million tonnes of plastic waste every year. Of the seven billion tonnes of plastic waste generated globally so far, less than 10 per cent has been recycled. Millions of tonnes of plastic waste are lost to the environment, or sometimes shipped thousands of kilometres to destinations where it is mostly burned or dumped. The estimated annual loss in the value of plastic packaging waste during sorting and processing alone is US$ 80- 120 billion. It is time to change how we produce, consume and dispose of the plastic we use! Take pity on this beautiful planet where life exists in the form of beautiful nature with creatures. Save our mother planet Earth by avoiding the use Plastics.

Today seems to be the day when things finally start to rattle. Another major media outlet, The Telegraph, has published an article titled "The Myth of Plastic Recycling is Finally Unravelling." 📉 It highlights the growing challenges and misconceptions around plastic recycling. The reality of plastic waste in the UK: ♻️ Only 17% of plastic is recycled. 🔥 58% is incinerated. 🌍 14% is exported for processing. Schemes like Tesco’s soft plastic recycling often fail, with most of the waste ending up incinerated. 🚮 It's time for a real shift in how we manage our waste 🌱 #ZeroWaste #CircularEconomy #PlasticCrisis https://lnkd.in/eDrwsVkr

Interesting read.
Recently on our blog we've been talking about the UK Plastic Pact ♻ UK homes are estimated to discard an astounding 100 billion plastic packaging pieces annually, equating to approximately 2.5 million metric tons of plastic packaging discarded as waste in 2021. 🌏 Why does a Global Plastics Treaty need to include upstream measures such as limiting production and adopting alternative materials? ♻ The plastics industry has successfully promoted the narrative that recycling is the panacea to the #PlasticPollution crisis. Yet globally only 9% of plastic is recycled. 💲 What’s more, this illusion allows upstream plastic companies to protect their profit margins and shifts the clean-up costs of plastic waste downstream. “Provincial governments and municipalities are often the poorest in this whole chain, and they are burdened with sorting the problem. They don’t want to dump it into the ground, but they often have no choice”, Planet Tracker’s John Willis told Bloomberg. In order to tackle the plastic pollution crisis, petrochemical companies that make plastic polymers must play a greater role. Hence why 70 international financial institutions representing assets worth USD 6.8 trillion are calling on petrochemical companies to address plastic pollution issues. Did you know...Every year, over 500 billion single-use plastic and paper cups are manufactured globally, generating a total of over 1 million tonnes of waste in plastic lids alone. These lids are more often made of polypropylene or polystyrene; which are petroleum-based plastics that are difficult to recycle. The majority of cups produced have a PLU lining meaning they are also not recyclable or require special treatment, The process of recycling and making these plastic lids usable again is prohibitively expensive, and costs more than it does to manufacture new lids. As a result, more lids are produced, and these find their way into landfill sites at alarming rates. Our mission is to eradicate the use of plastics in takeaway cups. So let me introduce you to No More Lids...The UK and Portuguese home of The Good Cup! Take peek here...www.nomorelids.com

It’s Plastic Free July and the spotlight is on plastic waste. The first synthetic plastic, Bakelite, was introduced in the early 1900s. Since then, plastic consumption has soared. Over half of plastic ever manufactured has been produced since 2000. And global annual production is set to double by 2050*. What has happened to all this plastic? * An estimated 9% of the plastics ever produced have been recycled. * 12% have been incinerated. * The remainder is still in use, has gone to landfill, or found its way into the environment. If you’ve been meaning to seek advice on reducing plastic in your packaging, or finding out about reusable, recycled, or recyclable plastic packaging options – now’s the perfect time. Call us on 0800 840 9570 or send an email to support@actionpoint.co.uk so that we can help. *Source: European Environment Agency #PlasticFreeJuly #Packaging #Plastic #PlasticPackaging #PlasticPollution #PlasticWaste #Recycle
