Access to research faculty and conducting research are two of the top reasons for attending a Research 1 (or R1: Doctoral University) like University of California, Davis. Students first opportunity to learn about these programs is at the Undergraduate Research Fair from 3 to 5 p.m. Oct. 10 at the ARC Ballroom and Courtyard. No rsvp required for students. More than 37 faculty will be on-site to help students participate in research projects, learn about research programs and explore opportunities to work in labs. This fair is one of the many programs and events offered by the Undergraduate Research Center. https://lnkd.in/g-xnxj-j Raynell Hamilton-Starks Dee Clark Lolita Adkins Jason Masino, MFA #Research #UndergraduateResearch #ResearchFair

Important lesson for students applying for a PhD: Your research group matters much more than the ranking of the university. Your advisor and your lab members are the 2 factors which largely determine your success and failure during a PhD. Don't just look at QS Rankings of universities and apply. Look at the websites of research groups, how frequently do they publish, what is the average time for graduation in the group, where do graduate students in the group end up? A lab at UMass Amherst with a good culture and which is aligned well with your research, might be much better than a toxic lab at MIT.

🎓 Flashback to my PhD days! 🎓 I was lucky enough to receive media training during my PhD, and it opened many doors to traditional media—think newspapers and radio. It gave me the platform to share my research far and wide. But I was one of the lucky few… most PhD students don’t get this kind of training 😕. That’s why Alicia Cintron, PhD’s article is a must-read for researchers. If you want to get your research out there, this is the next best thing! 🎤📢 Read her tips here 👇 https://lnkd.in/gk-gwYxd

Have people noticed a trend where PhD programs are requiring incoming students to already have some publications from their undergraduate research? What happens if the student is from an institution with limited research opportunities? Are we shutting the door on that entire class of talent? More scary is this - how can one expect an undergraduate to go deep and fully grasp the complexity and nuances that are characteristic of high quality publications? Unless the student is lucky enough to join a lab with an army of postdocs and manages to get a paper by simply making a reagent or two - in which case, how meaningful is that? From my experience, early success of this nature is absolutely NOT a predictor of future success. What really matters is depth and quality - that takes time to master - and the student may not have the time to parlay that into a paper during their undergraduate degree. Thoughts?
