Practical Empathy Startups, especially those designed to improve human outcomes like in edtech, don't exist in a vacuum. Their impact ripples through various stakeholders, making it essential to identify and understand these connections from the outset. A crucial step, and one of our programme's first outputs, is to map out all the people who will experience material change from the startup's existence. This is the first stage of practical empathy; knowing exactly who you're serving. Then the hard work starts!

How much can edtech companies really do to drive change in education? Today we're taking part in showcases (at 11:00) at the Web Summit in Lisbon, where we'll be presenting our edtech solutions. This has got us thinking of this question. Two main issues come into focus: 1️⃣ The technology itself. From AI 'hallucinations' to data security and ethical concerns, there are significant hurdles to making these tools truly reliable and safe for education. 2️⃣ The education system. With its rigid structures, limited flexibility and lack of change-driven leaders, it's a challenge to find educators willing to drive innovation or stay motivated within the current system. It may seem that edtech companies can only address the first issue. (Our team is already getting better at managing AI hallucinations, for example.) But if we design products that really help educators solve their problems, we don't have to convince them to use technology. By creating products that meet educators' needs and are easy to adapt, we're not just solving technical challenges - we're helping to break down barriers within the education system itself. Can technology really transform education? Let's discuss it! We'll be at Stand A723 in the alpha startups section on 13 November. Our showcase will be at 11.00 on stage 9. #websummit #edtech #showcase
