From washing utensils at a restaurant to building a 300 Cr business. I’m on a business tour these days, so airports have become the second home for me. The best part? I get plenty of time to read interesting things while waiting for my flight. Recently, I came across an interesting article about a man who went from washing utensils at a restaurant for a salary of Rs. 18 per month to building a business of 300 Crore. He’s also known as the ‘Dosa King of the North’. Yes, I’m talking about the founder of Sagar Ratna. Meet Jayaram Banan, hailing from Udupi, Karnataka who began his journey at the young age of 13 after failing his school exam. He borrowed some money from his father and went to Mumbai and joined a local restaurant at Rs. 18 per month. This was just the beginning, and he did the work with utmost dedication that led him to Delhi in 1974 where he was in charge of the management of a canteen. This was the turning point in his life because he decided to embark on his entrepreneurial journey hereon. He saw an opportunity to introduce authentic South Indian cuisine to North India—a region where these flavors were relatively unknown. He took the leap of faith and opened the first Sagar Ratna outlet in Defence Colony, New Delhi in 1986. Jayaram's vision and strategic thinking set Sagar Ratna apart. He concentrated on perfecting a few key dishes that became the hallmark of the brand. As word spread, Sagar Ratna began to grow and he expanded his business model through franchising, ensuring the brand's core values were maintained across all outlets. Authentic sweets and namkeen were served at this establishment, which was established in the alleyways of Bikaner. In the early 1950s, Agarwal and his brother Satyanarayan Agarwal traveled to Delhi because Agarwal had goals that extended beyond the boundaries of their small village. The Agarwal brothers faced many difficulties during their early years in Delhi. They labored day and night to make ends meet as they made their way through Old Delhi's streets with buckets full of bhulla and rasgullas. The Agarwal brothers worked tirelessly for years before opening a confectionery in Delhi's busy Chandni Chowk neighborhood. They provided a variety of mouthwatering sweets and namkeen, utilizing their family's recipes that had been handed down over the years. Bikaner Namkeen Bhandar's mouthwatering moong dal halwa, Bikaneri bhujia, kaju katil, and other treats earned it rapid fame. Encouraged by their early #success, the Agarwal brothers entered the restaurant industry and opened several locations around the nation. The company's current net worth of Rs 1300 crore is a result of its market expansion and acquisition of export licenses. Ever wondered how Bisleri International Pvt Ltd became synonymous with water? 1949- The Late Shri Jayantilal Chauhan launched Parle Group to manufacture soft drinks. 1965- Introduction of Bisleri in Mumbai. 1969- Parle Group bought Bisleri from an Italian entrepreneur Signor Felice Bisleri. The quality of water in Europe around World War II was abysmal raising the need for packaged drinking. Back then, India faced a similar problem. Ramesh Chauhan from Parle Group could sense an opportunity brewing. 2006-Bisleri changed the brand's colour from Blue ➡️ Green.
