Often, the true essence of a place lies in the people who inhabit it. In our recent community kick-off, we delved into the core of what truly connects us within our living spaces. It's more than just the shared spaces where our members convene; it's the everyday encounters – a friendly exchange while making an espresso in the kitchen, a passing “hej” in the hallway, a shared smile from the sofa in our shared living rooms. It's inspiring to witness how our members perceive community as not just a place, but a haven of friendship and belonging. During our community kick-off at Copartment, a question lingered for us: Is community-building a one-time event, or a continual, evolving process woven into our daily lives? The answer, though apparent, carries deeper layers. As operators, we recognize that launching a community extends far beyond providing a space and hosting an event. It's about cultivating an environment where bonds form and connections deepen with each and every day. As we think about our goal of supporting more intentional lifestyles, we understand that fostering community is an ongoing journey of adaptation and growth. So, we contemplate: Can a sense of belonging be solely crafted by an operator, or does it emerge through the shared effort of the members of the community itself? It's not just about the people who inhabit a space; it's about how that space is nurtured, tended to, and how it facilitates connections, ultimately shaping the unique tapestry of belonging. After all, while people are the foundation, we believe that it's the shared experiences, intentional interactions, and the opportunities created that truly make a place memorable. Thank you to our amazing team Divya Kasarabada and Marcus Waserbrot for hosting and Rebecca Gustafsson for the amazing photos! #coliving #communitybuilding #realestate

Gathering and community building are deeply connected, as bringing people together fosters shared experiences, connection, and belonging—key foundations of strong communities. Meeting one of my favorite authors, Priya Parker at a House of Beautiful Business gathering was transformative, I can still feel the energy and the smell of sitting in the precious Academy of Sciences library in Lisbon . In The Art of Gathering, Parker emphasizes that the power of a gathering lies in its purpose and intention—not just logistics. For her, gatherings should be carefully crafted to reflect a clear purpose, which is essential in building communities that are united by meaningful engagement. Parker’s approach is particularly relevant for community building, where the aim is to create spaces where people feel seen, valued, and connected by shared goals. Intentional design in gatherings goes beyond merely assembling people; it establishes environments that foster open dialogue, empathy, and a sense of collective identity. A core idea in Parker’s philosophy is beginning with a “why.” When community builders focus on this purpose, each gathering becomes a step toward deeper connections and stronger group identity. This framework encourages commitment and mutual support, transforming individuals into a unified community with shared intentions. By organizing gatherings rooted in intention, leaders create spaces that nurture trust, inspire investment in one another, and foster belonging. Purposeful gatherings—whether company events or casual meetups—can strengthen bonds and turn groups into communities with lasting impact. Below is a gathering I organized that was magically captured by an artist (gracias David Valor). Many years later I would hope those around the table: Sumir Ganguly Diana Rueda Elana Loewenthal Geoffroy Gérard Carolina Prieto Sarabia RUTH DIEZ MARTINEZ still recall the "why". #IntentionalGathering #FeelingSeen #Belonging #CommunityBuilding

In the intricate fabric of society, there exists a space beyond the realms of home (first space) and work (second space) – it's the "Third Space." These informal gathering spots, whether a neighborhood café, a local park bench, or a bustling community center, play a pivotal role in fostering connections, nurturing creativity, and bolstering social cohesion. 🌱 Cultivating Connections: Third spaces serve as melting pots where individuals from diverse backgrounds converge, fostering organic interactions and cross-cultural exchanges. These encounters transcend societal barriers, fostering empathy, understanding, and a sense of belonging. 💡 Spark of Creativity: Within the relaxed ambiance of third spaces, ideas flow freely. From impromptu brainstorming sessions to serendipitous encounters with like-minded individuals, these environments ignite creativity and innovation. They provide fertile ground for collaboration and the incubation of new ventures. 🤝 Building Social Capital: The bonds forged in third spaces are the building blocks of robust communities. They strengthen social capital by nurturing trust, reciprocity, and collective problem-solving. In times of need, these networks serve as lifelines, mobilizing support and resources for those facing adversity. 🏙️ Revitalizing Urban Landscapes: Third spaces breathe life into urban landscapes, transforming sterile concrete jungles into vibrant hubs of activity. By reclaiming public spaces and repurposing underutilized areas, they contribute to the revitalization of neighborhoods, making them more livable and resilient. As we navigate an increasingly digitalized world, the significance of third spaces in fostering real-world connections and nurturing community bonds cannot be overstated. Let's champion the creation and preservation of these invaluable spaces, ensuring that every individual has access to the social nourishment they provide. Together, let's cultivate communities where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued. #CommunityBuilding #ThirdSpaces #SocialCohesion #UrbanRevitalization #Connection #Innovation

In the world of renting, the experience goes far beyond the simple exchange of goods or services. It’s about discovering shared values and creating a sense of belonging. Renting opens the door to new connections, where people come together over common needs and aspirations. Each transaction is an opportunity to build something deeper-friendships, networks, and a community that thrives on collaboration and mutual respect. By renting, we don't just share spaces; we share moments, experiences, and the journey toward a more connected and supportive community, where renters become more than just neighbors-they become lifelong friends. #RentingLife #CommunityBuilding #SharedExperiences #RentingTogether #StrongerTogether #RentingConnections #TogetherWeRent #CommunityMatters #BuildingBonds #RentAndConnect #CollaborativeLiving #SharedSpaces #RentingCommunity

Calling all oldies!* Feeling like your *older multifamily community doesn’t have much to offer without an in-house masseuse or complimentary yoga classes? (Yes, those are definitely the wildest amenities we’ve seen.) Quit the negative self-talk! 🌟 Don’t let the new “luxury” kids on the block steal your sunshine. You might not be new or fancy, but you have something different to offer—that you can totally underscore with the right branding and smart marketing. 🏡 Think hard about what makes you special: the location. The atmosphere. The massive mature trees all around. The close-knit community vibe (cue the Cheers theme song). Why do people come there and stay there? 💡Brand your community with an emphasis on your location and your connection to the neighborhood. 💡Boost the resident experience with some small, but fun events—maybe some lower-cost giveaways every so often. The biggest piece to making your older community “one to watch” is BRANDING. That’s what makes your value visible and tangible. (This is ALSO true of lower class apartments. Consistency counts for a lot.) A positive resident experience Your regular neighborhood community engagement = 🚀Creating a positive culture with your community.🚀 ^^That’s not likely to be found in any amenity list, but it’s something no community should be without.

We live in high-rise buildings and apartment complexes, floor after floor. But how well do we really know our neighbors? Often, we don't even know their names. Doors close, and we live our lives within our own four walls. It can feel both comfortable and safe, but also lonely. Living in an apartment building doesn't mean we have to live isolated lives. Imagine if we could create spaces where we can meet, socialize, and care for one another? To combat loneliness in our residential areas, we need to create opportunities for interaction. This could involve shared spaces like laundry rooms, hobby rooms, or outdoor patios that facilitate spontaneous encounters. Organized community events, like parties, barbecues, or book clubs, can foster a sense of togetherness. Digital platforms can also facilitate communication and coordination among neighbors. By creating places where we can meet and socialize, we can make our residential areas more pleasant and vibrant. Within our projects we want to combat loneliness and create a stronger community. Stay tuned 🚀🚀

Third Spaces .. What are they and why do they matter? 🤔 Third spaces are social environments that are distinct from the traditional spaces of home (first space) and work (second space). They're places where people gather, interact, and engage in activities outside of their usual routines. And they matter because they play a crucial role in fostering a sense of belonging, social cohesion, and civic engagement within communities. They provide opportunities for people to safely interact, share ideas, and forge meaningful relationships, as well as enrich us personally. This is especially important in a world where our professional identities sit at the forefront of our lives. It's why at GirlDreamer we've always placed a heavy emphasis on holistic support, and creating third spaces has always been a prevalent part of what we offer and how we support our community. Our surfing retreats, supper clubs, social events, games nights, outdoor experiences, etc. have all been a core part of our identity, but it has definitely been an uphill battle trying to "prove" why these spaces are equally important and a crucial part of access, healing and development. For us, they're especially important because they contribute to women of colour experiencing radical joy. Yes, 🌟 radical joy 🌟 It's far more profound than just "a group of women having fun", third spaces are an opportunity to feel safe, be authentic and connect more with ourselves and others. And for women of colour, experiencing this connection and radical joy reverts to the need and necessity of healing justice. It's all connected. In our isolated, digital and disconnected world, we need this more than ever. Luckily for us, we're about to facilitate a lot more of them at GirlDreamer and honour our initial mission. We'll just wait for the sector, companies and individuals alike to catch up! 😉 Do you have access to third spaces? Would love to hear your thoughts and experiences! 💭 #thirdspaces #psychologicalsafety #communitybuilding #womenofcolour

What could be more sensible and less radical than creating places where people could be happy, healthy, safe, welcome, connected and fulfilled? Seth Kaplan refers to #socialhabitats, Jan Gehl and Fred Kent might call them human habitats. Many people would call them good places or neighbourhoods. And yet, when we look around in most neighbourhoods, towns and cities, we see: 😨 Streets and public spaces that are unsafe, unsociable, uncomfortable, inaccessible, bad for local businesses, unsustainable or car-dominated. 😒 Cities, towns and neighbourhoods that are disconnected, lonely, car-dominated, unsafe, unhealthy, unsustainable or where people feel disempowered. We are a social species, so how have we strayed so far from creating social #placesforpeople. It does seem strange. #Placemaking calls for radical change, but from the bottom-up, led by local people and governments working collaboratively together to create great places. It doesn't start with expensive, top-down masterplans or sweeping strategies. It can begin with conversations, connections, but most importantly action! The complex challenges of our times require more effective and implementable approaches. Placemaking can play a role in the changes that need to happen for the future of our societies.
