Have you ever seen a safety measure backfire🤷♂️? I recently came across the Cobra Effect, and it got me thinking about how safety policies can sometimes do more harm than good. Quick backstory—back in colonial India, the government wanted to reduce the cobra population, so they introduced a bounty for every dead snake. Sounds like a smart idea, right? Well, people started breeding cobras just to claim the reward. When the government caught on and scrapped the bounty, all those extra cobras were released, making the problem even worse. Now, bring this into workplace safety. I’ve seen cases where safety policies, meant to protect workers, actually create new risks: 🔸 Pushing for zero incidents so hard that people stop reporting near misses. 🔸 Setting strict safety targets without the right support, making workers take shortcuts. 🔸 Rewarding the absence of accidents instead of promoting proactive risk management. At the end of the day, safety isn’t just about rules—it’s about understanding behaviors, encouraging transparency, and creating a culture where people feel safe to speak up. I put together a short animation with invideo to illustrate this. Let me know what you think! #HSE #SafetyCulture #CobraEffect #WorkplaceSafety #RiskManagement #EHS #Safety #Environment #Health #TheCobraEffect #Nebosh #IOSH
