Both research project BIWE & MUST-related issues today at SRI! It´s wonderful to be part of the Sustainable Cities Discussion Forum in Understanding and Monitoring Sustainability at a Neighborhood Level! Sustainable neighbourhoods are communities where environmental responsibility, social justice, and economic viability are realized. The need to promote genuine, sustainable development at the neighbourhood level has been widely recognized, yet thus far, scientifically researched indicators for measuring sustainability at this level have typically not been available. The Helsinki Institute of Urban and Regional Studies Urbaria's new book, "Towards More Sustainable Urban Areas – Sustainability Indicators for Neighborhoods and Blocks", is a conversation starter to solve this problem. The book includes contributions from 34 leading Finnish researchers on how local sustainability challenges can best be identified, measured, and addressed. At our workshop, following a short presentation of the book, three researchers will present their chosen indicators for monitoring sustainability in urban neighborhoods. After each presentation we will have an interactive discussion on implementing these monitoring tools, as well as the actions citizens can take to improve the sustainability challenges highlighted by them. The ecological footprint (EFP) measures how much human activities demand from nature compared to what the planet can renew. Here's a breakdown of the study's findings: 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝘁: The study found that a 1% increase in green energy supply led to a 0.09% increase in the ecological footprint. This means that even though green energy is generally considered environmentally friendly, its increase in this context surprisingly resulted in a greater demand on natural resources, thus reducing ecological sustainability. 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Similarly, a 1% increase in green innovation and green production increased the ecological footprint by 0.14% and 0.11%, respectively. This suggests that while these innovations are intended to be sustainable, they might be leading to unintended environmental pressures. 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵: A 1% increase in economic growth was found to increase the ecological footprint by 0.75%, indicating that economic expansion still heavily relies on resource consumption, which harms ecological sustainability. In summary, the study suggests that 𝑐𝑢𝑟𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑔𝑟𝑒𝑒𝑛 𝑖𝑛𝑣𝑒𝑠𝑡𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑠 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑡𝑒𝑐ℎ𝑛𝑜𝑙𝑜𝑔𝑖𝑒𝑠 𝑖𝑛 𝐺-20 𝑐𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑒𝑠 𝑚𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 𝑛𝑜𝑡 𝑏𝑒 𝑎𝑠 𝑒𝑓𝑓𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒 𝑖𝑛 𝑟𝑒𝑑𝑢𝑐𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑒𝑐𝑜𝑙𝑜𝑔𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙 𝑓𝑜𝑜𝑡𝑝𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑠 𝑎𝑠 𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑑𝑒𝑑. Instead, they are associated with increased ecological demands. This implies that while green investments are crucial, they need to be more strategically aligned with sustainable practices to truly benefit environmental quality. #greeninvestment #ecologicalfootprint #sustainability #greentechnology #economicgrowth #g20 #environmentalimpact https://lnkd.in/daTvqJYm

🌍 Advancing Global Sustainability Through Circular Economy and UNRMS Last week at the NICER Circular Economy Showcase in London, UNECE Sustainable Energy Division Director, Dario Liguti, and Economic Affairs Officer, Nadejda K. Khamrakulova, presented on how the UN Resource Management System (UNRMS) is advancing resource efficiency, climate action, and innovation. Key points highlighted include: - Critical Raw Materials & Recycling: With only 9% of global materials recycled and less than 1% of lithium currently reused, gaps in recycling infrastructure are slowing progress towards a more sustainable economy. - Resource Sustainability Concerns: The demand for critical raw materials is expected to increase by up to 500% by 2050, driven by the transition to clean energy. Yet, new mining projects risk environmental degradation and social opposition, particularly from communities facing displacement or long-term environmental impacts. ️ - UN Secretary-General’s Critical Energy Transition Minerals (CETMs) Panel Recommendations: The panel outlined seven key principles that emphasize reducing environmental impacts, promoting social justice, and enhancing recycling and reuse of critical minerals. These principles aim to foster international cooperation for securing sustainable mineral supply chains essential for the green energy transition. - UNRMS as the Implementation Tool: UNRMS serves as a global framework that integrates these CETM principles into practical, sustainable governance of resources. By promoting circular economy models and waste-to-resource technologies, UNRMS aligns critical material management with climate and sustainability goals, ensuring responsible resource use across generations. ️ - UK International Centre of Excellence on Sustainable Resource Management (ICE-SRM): Launched in April 2024, this Centre focuses on circular economy solutions for critical materials, metals, and construction sectors. With partners such as Brunel University, the British Geological Survey, Swansea University, University College London, and the University of Exeter, it aims to leverage UK expertise to support countries worldwide in transitioning to greener, more sustainable resource management systems. - Equitable Resource Governance: UNRMS integrates economic, social, and environmental considerations, ensuring that resource management benefits all, especially in the Global South, through capacity building and technology transfer. #CircularEconomy #SustainableResourceManagement #UNRMS #ClimateAction #CriticalRawMaterials #Innovation #UNECE #CETM #ICE_SRM
