Congratulations to Techniquest on winning Best Venue for STEM Learning at the School Travel Awards in London for the second year in a row! We echo the comments from Rob Yandell, publisher of School Travel Organiser: “Learning is one thing, but to really experience something you need to go beyond the school gates. We know that some still see school trips as an ‘add-on’ or an end of year treat. But the appreciation and awareness of how important learning outside the classroom is, and how it can impact young people, continues to grow." Full article at: https://lnkd.in/ewEBrHXJ

"Education is a complex problem, where should I start and focus?" This is precisely why the Teach For Malaysia Fellowship resonated with me. The best way to understand the problem is by working directly with underprivileged students and school management as a high school teacher for two years. What I value the most is the pedagogical coaching received from experts (Leadership Development Officers) and the constant learning from each Fellow in our regular Professional Learning Community meetups. Through this experience, I realized the stark difference between merely knowing about the low literacy rate among underprivileged kids and experiencing it firsthand in my everyday classes. Immersing myself in this environment helped me to find out the kids could need a space for them to learn and stay curious. "Education reform is a movement; how can I support others and leverage on others?" Each Fellow is required to design an initiative to address the identified issues. For me, fostering student interest and curiosity in learning was achieved through robotics. I garnered student interest and school management support to reestablish the Reka Cipta club, exposing students to the fun of learning science through hands-on experience. Additionally, the wide corporate and alumni network provided by Teach For Malaysia helped me secure funding and materials for my robotics initiative from Chumbaka and Astro. Eventually, collaborating with three other Fellows across different schools, we exposed more than 200 students to STEM through competitions, tours to science fairs in KL, and university visits. My students not only competed at the national level for two consecutive years but most importantly also instilled pride and a sense of possibility in their school. This collaborative environment, coupled with a strong sense of movement, motivates us to creatively and competitively solve the complex education problem. It's heartwarming to witness that I am not alone in this journey, as my Fellow peers are striving in their own ways and beliefs, all with the shared goal of providing our children with a better education. Everyone is willing to share and support each other, ensuring the mission moves forward. Even after the Fellowship, I remain committed to the movement. There are numerous opportunities to get involved as Alumni. When I reach my end, I want to confidently say with all my comrades that "We made the world a slightly better place because we were here." This path may be challenging, but I strongly encourage you to apply, as there's nothing more satisfying than witnessing our children's success. If you're a Malaysian below age 40 and would like to take on the challenge of being part of this movement, I urge you to apply before June 30, 2024. https://lnkd.in/eUvDeW8z #TFMFellowship #NationBuilders #AnakMalaysiaBoleh #JoinTheMovement #MakeAnImpact #BuildingLeaders

I'm feeling reflective as I finish updating the Humanizing Showcase page with the work of our final cohort of participants. With funding from the California Education Learning Lab, we have had total of 330 participants complete the 6-week Humanizing Online STEM Academy, representing nineteen institutions across two segments of California public higher ed. The humanized online teaching model leverages "warm demander" pedagogy, a cornerstone of culturally responsive teaching, and 8 elements of psychologically inclusive course design. The Academy levels up faculty digital fluency with hands-on content creation, while advancing self-awareness of one's privileges and biases, and examining way stereotypes about intelligence disproportionately impact BIPOC students and women in STEM (as well as faculty). The model has been adopted and adapted into local professional development offerings and has been introduced at institutions across the country, as well. I am extremely proud of this work. An important dimension of this project that may not seem so important at first glance has been to encourage institutions to invest in professional development as equity infrastructure. In the past two years, our partner institutions invested a total of $214,200 in the Humanizing Academy. Why is this important? Research from Achieving the Dream (see link below) shows that community colleges and minority serving institutions (MSIs) are more likely than other institutions to have a culture that espouses a value for professional development, but are less likely to have a teaching and learning center and other resources needed to support the implementation of transformative PD programs. A common symptom of this problem is over reliance on webinars, which are quick and affordable but are less likely to lead to long term improvements in practice. Why? Because meaningful professional development is expensive and community colleges and MSIs are underfunded. And higher education culture is deeply informed by efficiency (more = better). While there are many factors that contribute to the effectiveness of PD, we know that the more time faculty spend on it, the more likely it is to result in practice improvements. In the end, the institutions that support the most marginalized and vulnerable students are the least likely to provide access to effective professional development. Professional development is its own field of expertise. Developing and testing the effectiveness of PD programs at a state or system level is far more cost-effective than having institutions create and implement their own programs. However, scaling programs requires getting to know an institution's unique context and that unfolds over time through relationship-building. humanizeol.org/showcases Realizing the Promise of Professional Learning for Teaching, Equity, and Change, Achieving the Dream. https://lnkd.in/g_gygpGK
