Last week, I met an incredibly enthusiastic individual with a dream of establishing his own footwear factory. We spent half a day together, sharing ideas and discussing our visions. At one point, he looked at me with curiosity and asked, "Why are you in this business? Why did you choose this industry?" His question took me back to my internship days. I remembered working at a large garment factory in Okhla, New Delhi. It was there that I first witnessed the grim reality of how workers could be treated—harshly and without respect, both physically and mentally. The experience left a profound impact on me, shaping my understanding of the industry’s darker side. But then, I recalled another factory I had visited in Chennai. This place was a stark contrast to the one in Okhla. Here, the workers were treated with respect and dignity. They were engaged, involved, and genuinely appreciated. The positive atmosphere was palpable, and it was clear that the workers thrived in this environment. Seeing these two extremes made me reflect deeply on the kind of leader I wanted to be and the industry I wanted to work in. The #apparel, #footwear and #leather goods industries are unique. They are labor-intensive, relying heavily on a workforce that often comes from underprivileged backgrounds with limited educational opportunities. Treating these workers poorly only perpetuates a cycle of hardship. But what if we could change that? What if we could build a culture of inclusiveness, trust, respect, and empowerment? Such an environment could transform lives, influencing not just the workers but their families and communities as well. This ripple effect could help build a better society and, ultimately, a better nation. As a #lean practitioner, I have dedicated myself to this mission. I strive to help my clients create businesses that not only achieve financial success but also make a positive impact on the lives they touch. To realize this vision, I develop strategies that integrate human connection, social responsibility, and sustainable growth into the core of their companies. This means nurturing a culture where every stakeholder feels valued and heard, and where business goals align with societal well-being. By fostering such environments, we can inspire a ripple effect of positive change, extending these principles across industries and communities. Together, we can chart a course toward a future where businesses are the foundation of a compassionate and sustainable society. This is why I chose this industry and why I am committed to making a difference.
