The Mark Hughes Foundation (MHF) has announced a landmark $1 million investment to unite two of Australia's leading brain cancer research centers in a shared mission to accelerate progress toward a cure. The MHF Centre for Brain Cancer Research at the University of Newcastle is joining forces with The Brain Cancer Centre in Melbourne. This powerful partnership aims to pool resources and combine research efforts to achieve better outcomes for brain cancer patients. With #braincancer being the leading cause of cancer death in children and adults under 40 in #Australia, this collaboration is vital. Established by Mark and Kirralee Hughes after Mark's diagnosis with a high-grade brain cancer in 2013, MHF is committed to fostering collaboration. The Foundation's latest initiative includes a National Collaboration Seed Fund, made possible by the success of the 2024 Beanie for Brain Cancer campaign and support from the NRL's Beanie Round. Professor Mike Fay, Chair and Director of the MHF Centre for Brain Cancer Research, emphasized the importance of expanding research partnerships to fast-track solutions. "In 2024, we are focusing on collaboration to accelerate progress in our quest to find new solutions," he said. Mark Hughes highlighted the significance of bringing together experts and innovators to tackle the brain cancer challenge. "By embracing a 'one team' mentality where competition gives way to collaboration, we will make progress in the fight against brain cancer," Mark said. Sam McGuane, CEO of The Brain Cancer Centre, expressed excitement about the partnership, which includes integrating the BRAIN Registry, the first large clinical cancer registry dedicated to brain tumor patients in Australia and #NewZealand. This collaboration represents a significant step forward in brain cancer research, driven by the unwavering support of Mark and Kirralee Hughes and the commitment of researchers across Australia. Together, they aim to translate discoveries into new treatments and trials, providing hope for brain cancer patients and their families. #BrainCancerResearch #Collaboration #MarkHughesFoundation #HealthcareInnovation #ResearchPartnerships #BrainCancerAwareness #OneTeam

Introducing: Australian Cancer Atlas 2.0 🌏 We’re excited to share the launch of the Australian Cancer Atlas 2.0, a groundbreaking collaboration between the QUT Centre for Data Science and Cancer Council Queensland that unveils new geographical cancer patterns across Australia. “The Australian Cancer Atlas provides an enhanced view of the geographical disparities and highlights where the impact of cancer is greatest. Now we have the data, the next step is understanding the “why”, then informed changes can be made to reduce these disparities,” Centre Director and Distinguished Professor Kerrie Mengersen said. Real-world impacts of the Australian Cancer Atlas: ⚖️ Using the Atlas alongside the Australian Cancer Plan, policymakers, advocates, and communities are empowered to aim for superior health outcomes for all Australians. 🏥 Insights provided by the tool are fundamental to understanding and tackling the disparities in cancer survival rates. 🔬 The Leukaemia Foundation is already using the tool to boost blood cancer research and ensure effective resource distribution. ✨ New Research Alert!! ✨ Research led by Oncode Investigator Jacco van Rheenen at The Netherlands Cancer Institute together with Colinda Scheele at VIB-KU Leuven Center for Cancer Biology and Benjamin Simons at ( Wellcome/ CRUK Gurdon Institute), reveals how a natural process that normally reshapes breast tissue during the estrous cycle (the mouse version of the menstrual cycle) can sometimes contribute to breast cancer if it doesn't work as it should. 💡 The study shows that during the estrous cycle, most abnormal cells that have acquired DNA mutations linked to cancer are cleared out. But there's a risk: some mutant cells can survive and spread across large areas of breast tissue, increasing the likelihood of cancer developing in those regions. This research also potentially explains why pregnancies and breastfeeding reduce the risk of breast cancer. The results are out now in Nature, read more: https://lnkd.in/eaiwbRpH Make sure to also read this nice article by Cancer Grand Challenges including an interview with the investigators, describing how fostering talent, collaboration and persistance can form a succesful recipe for scientific breakthroughs: https://lnkd.in/e9aiWNPB This study is conducted under the Cancer Grand Challenges project PRECISION which is led by Jelle Wesseling at the Netherlands Cancer Institute, and funded by Cancer Research UK (CRUK) and KWF Kankerbestrijding.
