With $4 million in National Institutes of Health funding over the course of three years, a new UIC Center for Climate and Health Equity will explore climate change’s effects on human health, working with Chicago communities to address issues of environmental justice. The new Center is directed by SPH professor and UIC Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences division director Kristen Malecki. “The fact that we have a diverse student population as well as these strong community partnerships really makes UIC the best place to make this happen,” Malecki said. We are thrilled to announce the Inequities in Childhood Life-Course Lead Exposure and Academic and Neurobehavioral Outcomes (I-CLEAN) study, a major step forward in environmental justice, led by UC Irvine Public Health researchers Alana LeBron and Wu Jun. This groundbreaking research focuses on the impact of lead-contaminated soil on 600 elementary school children in Santa Ana. The study is part of the ¡Plo-NO! Santa Ana coalition’s ongoing efforts to address the serious issue of lead contamination in the community. Funded by a $2.7 million grant from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), I-CLEAN aims to explore the connection between lead exposure and children's academic and behavioral outcomes. By combining community involvement with rigorous scientific research, this study hopes to shed light on the long-term effects of lead exposure and inform future public health initiatives. 🌍 **STEM for Environmental Justice: Reconstructing Hope at Amal Al Yateem Orphanage** 🌿 At the Green Companion Initiative, we understand the power of STEM education in driving sustainable development and environmental conservation. By integrating Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics into our programs, we are empowering the next generation to become informed stewards of our planet. Recently, we successfully geared the reconstruction of the only water source for the children at Amal Al Yateem Orphanage. This vital project not only ensures clean and safe water for the orphans but also instills in them a deeper understanding of environmental stewardship. 📽️ Watch the video to see the transformation and hear from the children about the impact this water source has on their lives. Their words underscore the importance of environmental rights and the role of young stewards in advancing environmental justice. We call upon the international community to join us in this crucial mission. Your support and collaboration are essential in advancing environmental rights and fostering a generation of children who are passionate about protecting our planet. 🤝 Together, we can create a legacy of environmental stewardship and ensure a sustainable future for all. #STEMEducation #WaterSourceRehabilitation #EnvironmentalJustice #GreenCompanionInitiative #SustainableFuture #ClimateAction #GlobalSupport Maya van Rossum

Have you RSVPed for our event on April 10 on #environmentaljustice? 🌎 If you're looking for some background information before the panel, check out the related paper that compares methods for addressing cumulative #EJ burdens. 👇 The authors, including RFF University Fellows Lala Ma and Lucija Muehlenbachs, offers quantitative evidence to show that low-income neighborhoods and communities of color have a higher likelihood of facing coexisting environmental burdens and social stressors. https://lnkd.in/eC8xcpup

Register Now: Cumulative Impacts and Public Health Webinar October 1 2024 11 PST / 12 MT/ 1 CST/ 2EST Description: Our systems of environmental and public health, safety, and protection – regulations, policies, and practices that include land use, monitoring, permitting, and enforcement – have been dominated and governed by practices that center on one pollutant at a time and individual sources of pollution. This myopic approach has contributed greatly to environmental injustice. To achieve environmental justice and improve health, it is imperative we transform our regulatory system to acknowledge the myriad of socioeconomic stressors and conditions that synergistically and disproportionately impact overburdened communities. You will hear and learn from the following environmental justice grassroots leaders and experts Presenters: Richard Moore, Co-Coordinator of Los Jardines Institute Co-Chair of White House Environmental Justice Advisory Council Courtney Hanson, Deputy Executive Director People for Community Recovery Elizabeth J Friedman MD, MPH Director of Environmental Health Children’s Mercy Hospital Katherine Catalano, Deputy Director APHA Center for Climate, Health & Equity

What an incredible first day at the 10th CEEJH Environmental Justice Symposium: Environmental Justice Past, Present, and Future Conference! We delved into crucial topics, including Food Sovereignty in Indigenous Communities, Restorative Justice, Reproductive Justice, and Advanced Climate and Energy Justice. It's clear that people of color and low-wealth populations are disproportionately affected by environmental hazards and health disparities rooted in a legacy of prejudicial policies. The launch of the Justice40 Initiative marks a significant step towards delivering benefits to disadvantaged communities, and it's inspiring to see federal and state agencies, along with community-based organizations and green groups, coming together for environmental justice. This symposium has shed light on the importance of integrating environmental justice principles into strategic plans to address issues impacting overburdened and underserved communities. I'm looking forward to hearing from EJ leaders and scholars about their environmental justice strategies and the progress being made to ensure communities' voices are heard and integrated in decision-making. #CEEJH #EnvironmentalJustice #Justice40 #CommunityEmpowerment #climate #ClimateChange #publichealthpolicy #publichealth #Energy #Justice #RestorativeJustice Here are some links to further information about environmental justice: https://lnkd.in/gycxNNmA https://lnkd.in/gk7K-X2e https://lnkd.in/g5a2MYHW
