Today, during our Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland Anniversary long weekend, I took Sumo for a walk up Maungawhau Mount Eden; a place I’ve known and have been close to my whole life. Growing up and having my first jobs in the neighbourhood, Maungawhau was always part of my landscape, a grounding and safe environment and presence during early years that weren’t always easy.
Walking up the maunga today brought a mix of nostalgia and fresh perspective. It’s a place I know so well, yet the recent restoration work has transformed it. This made me think about how much things can change when we approach them with care and intention.
Seeing a mix of locals and tourists at the summit, hearing a variety of languages and observing differing connections, made me think about how we often take what’s familiar for granted. What feels and becomes ordinary to us can be extraordinary and impressive to someone experiencing it for the first time.
It’s a good reminder as we wrap up the first month of 2025; no matter where you are in life or your career, every day is an opportunity to see things differently, make new decisions, and take fresh actions. The choices we make today can set us on a new path tomorrow.
So, my challenge for you is to revisit something familiar; a place, a habit, or even a relationship; and try to view it through new eyes. You might be surprised by the fresh inspiration or direction that comes from it.
What reflections or fresh starts have you made so far this year?
