🌿 On June 12, 2024, the European Economic and Social Committee hosted a public hearing on Aligning the circular economy and the bioeconomy at EU and national level . The aim? Boost synergies between bioeconomy, circularity and sustainability through a systemic approach to the circular bioeconomy, led by rapporteur Cillian Lohan. Blanca Casares Guillén, policy expert at AEIDL (European Association for Innovation in Local Development), presented “Circular (bio)economy: a promising pathway for sustainable farming and development in rural areas?” 🍃✨ She highlighted significant political momentum, including a flagship initiative for prosperous rural areas with actions for the development of a sustainable bioeconomy. The Council Conclusions in 2023 stressed the need to focus on rural areas in developing a bioeconomy. Blanca also shared insights from the BEATLES project EU, where AEIDL leads the co-creation of policy recommendations and tools. 🧑🌾 🚜 Curious to learn more? There is increasing recognition that behavioural shifts at individual, systemic, and policy levels are needed to foster the adoption of climate smart farming practices and technologies in the EU. Furthermore, EU policies need to consider the complex decision-making processes across the entire food value chain. Co-creation with relevant stakeholders across the food value chain can play a key role in addressing these gaps. Co-creation is a core component of the HORIZON Europe BEATLES project (Behavioural Change Towards Climate-Smart Food Systems). As part of the co-creation process, we have identified and engaged multiple stakeholder representatives across 5 food value chains in the EU - wheat farming in Lithuania, organic dairy farming in Germany, pig farming in Denmark, organic apple farming in Spain, onion and potato farming in the Netherlands. Follow this webinar and workshop to learn more...
On November 21, 2024, the BEATLES project EU hosted a successful webinar and workshop, co-organised with the sister project ENFASYS HEU, focusing on "𝗖𝗼-𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲." 🌱 The event brought together experts to discuss key insights, including the importance of co-creation methods and tailored strategies for stakeholder engagement, all aimed at helping stakeholders transition to more #sustainable agricultural practices. 🍎 🚜 👥 Special thanks to our speakers for their insightful presentation: Marilena Gemtou, PhD, Nelson Ekane, PhD, Davide Guariento, Louis Tessier, Marija Roglic, Sukaina B., Janne Parviainen, and Jon B.! Kudos to the partners Q-PLAN INTERNATIONAL and Sustainable Innovations (SIE) (BEATLES) and The Association of Balkan Eco-Innovation (Enfasys) for organising it! 🙏 📲 Read more here: https://lnkd.in/dr7hvU4H #HorizonEurope #behaviouralchange #ClimateSmartAgriculture #smartfarming #agriculture Smart Farming Technology Group - Agricultural University of Athens Agricultural University of Athens Københavns Universitet - University of Copenhagen National & Kapodistrian University of Athens National Technical University of Athens Wageningen University & Research AEIDL (European Association for Innovation in Local Development) SEI — Stockholm Environment Institute KPAD LTD Naturland e.V. At the recent #NextBite24 conference in Rome, organized by EIT Food, we delved into the transformative role of biotechnology in shaping the future of food in Europe. The European Commission has identified biotech as a top priority for the continent and in our panel we recognize its immense potential to revolutionize our food system: 1️⃣ Improve agriculture efficiency: 40% of global crop lands are degraded, while the global population and demand for food is continuing to grow. Biotech offers a solution to enhance the efficiency of our agriculture and food system. 2️⃣ Cost competitive climate intervention: Biotech is emerging as a next generation climate intervention with the potential to scale cost-effectively. By following the same learning curve as other clean technologies, biotech could achieve significant cost reductions, similar to the 70% decrease seen with every 100x scaling in other sectors. 3️⃣ Geostrategic resource efficiency: Beyond climate impact, biotech has the potential to reduce land use by up to 90-95% and water use by up to 70-90% for the highest impact food and agriculture use cases. 4️⃣ Potential for Europe to lead: Europe is at the forefront of research and development, filing approximately 40% more clean tech patents than the US and double the number compared to China. However, building production facilities in Europe remains 70-130% more expensive with longer timelines. All in all, there’s a tremendous opportunity for Europe to lead in and unlock the full potential of biotech for the food systems. To achieve this, we must collaborate to de-risk the industry's scale-up, from securing offtake agreements to achieving execution excellence in cost reduction, and from pioneering innovative financing structures to creating supportive ecosystems such as public-private partnerships. A special thank you to Kevin Camphuis for moderating the panel, and to Stella Child, PhD, Robert E. Jones and Christophe Luguel for the insightful panel discussion! I’m excited about continuing to push the boundaries and look forward to next year’s event Lorena Savani and Michiel De Ruiter. Also, a big shout-out to our incredible team: Roberto Uchoa de Paula, Mark Patel, Anna Littmann, Laura Millroy and Oscar Santegoeds.

Climate change extreme cold hit the wine industry in the B.C. Okanagan Valley last winter. It essentially killed most of the red grapes in the valley. How do we make the winery and other agricultural producers more resilient to extreme climate? Innovation adoption is key in this industry to drive climate smart agriculture and create value adding industries that help foster new technology investments and sustainable jobs. I will be attending International Forum on Biotechnology and Bioeconomy in Bologna Italy Oct 3-4th and participate in a panel discussion with Italian and European colleagues on the importance value chains from Agriculture to Industries.
