Truth and Reconciliation is not just a destination, but an ongoing journey, one that we must travel with intention, reflection, and respect. On this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we honour the survivors, families, and communities impacted by Canada’s residential school system. At United Way BC - Lower Mainland Region we are committed to this journey, recognizing that reconciliation is everyone's responsibility. Read the message below and consider how we can all contribute not just today, but every day—toward a more inclusive future for all. #UnitedForReconciliation #NationalDayForTruthAndReconciliation #IndigenousRights #EveryChildMatters #TruthandReconciliation #TRCDay #TruthandReconciliation #TRC #Indigenous
“The road we travel is equal in importance to the destination we seek. There are no shortcuts. When it comes to Truth and Reconciliation we are forced to go the distance.” -Justice Murray Sinclair, Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. Today is National Day for Truth & Reconciliation, a day dedicated to honouring the survivors, families, and communities affected by Canada’s residential school system. On this day of reflection, education and action, United Way British Columbia Director of Indigenous Priorities, Andrew Callicum shares the path that United Way British Columbia has taken to support reconciliation, and our journey so far. 🧡 Read his message here: https://lnkd.in/gtPSnQks As we move forward, we invite our partners and colleagues, and all British Columbians to join us in this vital work. 🧡 Today, September 30, is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. 🧡 This is the fourth annual day dedicated to encouraging Canadians to recognize, learn and reflect on our shared history. The experiences of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities in Canada have been marked by deep injustice. From the residential school system and the Sixties Scoop to ongoing systemic racism, historical and current challenges continue to impact the lives of Indigenous people across Turtle Island. This is more than one day. It is a lifelong commitment to unlearning, collaboration, and sustained efforts to support Indigenous communities. It is a time to reflect and honour the survivors and to pay tribute to the children who never made it home. There are many ways to honour, to learn and to reflect on this day: attend a National Truth and Reconciliation event, find resources to learn about the Residential School System, or support Indigenous businesses, artisans and creators. 👉 https://bit.ly/3Kuynfa By taking these steps, we are contributing to a broader effort of reconciliation and healing.

On April 18th, I was invited with little to no prep time to appear as part of a panel of witnesses for the Standing Committee on Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, as they conducted a study on the Accessible Transportation for Persons with Disabilities Regulations. It was a privilege to speak alongside Maayan Ziv, who delivered an outstanding and emotionally charged message. Though not my best speech, I believe I effectively conveyed my message. My three key points were: firstly, emphasizing the need for the Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) to collect and annually publish accessible travel related data; secondly, asserting that our equipment is inherently tied to human rights; and finally, advocating for collaboration between the air travel industry and medical industries to improve the design of wheelchairs and assistive devices for use in the confined spaces of airplanes. The session is lengthy, but you can fast forward to the key parts if you wish. I extend my gratitude to MPP Taylor Bachrach for facilitating my participation in this session. #TaylorBachrach #StandingCommitteeontransportInfrastructureandCommunities #AccessibleTransportationforPersonswithDisabilitiesRegulations TRAN - Accessible Transportation for Persons with Disabilities (ourcommons.ca)

Graduating high school and bracing for the big “what’s next” is the typical 18-year-old's trajectory. Imagine being thrust to the throne of one of the world’s most expansive empires at only 18, as Queen Victoria was in 1837. Victoria Day was created in honor of her 64-year rule from 1837–1901, one of the UK’s longest ever, and the pivotal changes made during that time, the Victorian Era. Queen Victoria is a symbol of Britain's industrial expansion and economic growth. Her political influence was signified by a shift away from sovereignty. She implemented the Second Reform Act of 1867 which introduced secret voting ballots. This helped protect voters from pressures of bribery or intimidation. Queen Victoria famously created the Confederation of Canada. In 1867, Canada was four separate colonies: Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec and Ontario. The British North America Act united these colonies into a single country. She pushed for the construction of the railway system, which profoundly impacted Canada’s economic and social development. Railways industrialized the country by awakening new markets and creating greater demand for resources and technology. The Canadian Pacific Railway accelerated settlement in the West. Investors began supporting mining, forestry, and agriculture industries, generating more jobs and establishing economic stability. Queen Victoria’s values of unity and cooperation assisted in creating positive relationships between the confederation’s many regions and communities. While highly traditionalist in some respects, especially around women’s rights, Queen Victoria advocated for improving the lives of the underprivileged by increasing access to education. Multiple schools, libraries, museums, and art galleries were built as a result. Did you know the story behind Victoria Day? 🇬🇧 Breaking News: A British Passport for Our Beloved Bear! Curious about the essentials for securing UK citizenship? Our favorite Peruvian Bear, Paddington, has just joined the British family, officially receiving his British passport! Despite his fame, even he had to meet the UK’s strict referee criteria for naturalisation. Here’s what’s essential: 👉 Referee Basics: Over 25, a British citizen, and must know the applicant for at least 3 years. 👉 Character Check: No criminal history and not a relative by birth or marriage. 👉Professional Standing: Should hold a respected profession (civil servant, doctor, teacher, etc.), be actively employed, and unaffiliated with the Home Office. These steps helped Paddington successfully reach his milestone, highlighting the importance of each criterion in a smooth process. Want to know more about how to meet these requirements? MAK25 London is ready to guide you through every detail for a seamless journey. Email: aamil@mak25.co.uk WhatsApp: 07823733189

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is intended to honour Survivors, their families, and communities, and ensure that public commemoration of the history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process. Personally, Dr. Piotrowski has found the free course “Indigenous Canada” on Coursera by Tracy Lee Bear & Paul L Gareau to be valuable. While this course does not centre around the impact of residential schools, she found it to be very helpful in understanding what life was like before the arrival of settlers to Turtle Island as well as the early relationship between the indigenous of this land and the settlers. (She particularly enjoyed the video format.) Specifically about Truth and Reconciliation with the Indigenous Peoples of Canada, here are some resources from which you and your family may learn valuable information: Read: Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada reports, including the TRC's Calls to Action, or order a hardcopy booklet. Watch: "Namwayut: We Are All One" CBC Video on Truth and Reconciliation in Canada, narrated by Chief Robert Joseph, a residential school survivor. Watch or listen: How can Canadians work toward reconciliation, an interview with Justice Murray Sinclair, former Chairperson of the TRC. We hope you find some time today to reflect. Participating in Orange Shirt Day or other events within your communities is a great start and we also very much encourage individuals to honour this day through education and awareness activities. #pacificeyedoctors #mapleridge #optometrycanada #truthandreconciliation

A critical discussion.
On the Feast Day of St. Francis Xavier Cabrini (patron saint of migrants), the PASOS Network at Dominican University is excited to host a national gathering in the hopes of strategizing and building networks of support for undocumented students at Catholic colleges and universities.
