What did I takeaway from the UNESCO Women4Ethical AI conference in Paris? Stop designing and deploying AI models that work for the few, instead: 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗽𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂'𝗹𝗹 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗜 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵: 𝘄𝗶𝗻-𝘄𝗶𝗻! Yesterday, at the Women for Ethical AI Conference @UNESCO in Paris, we launched the new outlook and discussed the state of gender. 🎉 It was an honor and a delight to get to meet my fellow Women for Ethical AI comrades! 🎉 What's the current path we're on for AI and gender? Not. Looking. Good. What you should know: 🎯 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁-𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗨𝗡𝗘𝗦𝗖𝗢 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝗜 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿, led by the fantastic Caitlin Corrigan: https://lnkd.in/eR9528m3 𝗪𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗔𝗜 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘀 (𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻): 1. Gabriela Ramos – “If we build for women, we build for all.” 2. Caitlin Kraft Buchman – “This is a crisis in waiting… And a great opportunity to do 21st century science” Even biomedical research is done on male mice; majority of genomics research is based on European men. “Consider all the examples of bias you’ve heard and consider them at velocity and at scale.” 3. Wanda Muñoz – “Intersectionality is the analytical framework we need now. If use we gender as a single attribute, we will end up perpetrating bias against the most marginalized women. We cannot leave anyone behind.” 4. Bhavani Rao R – “We need a value shift to begin with. Wolf packs have the old lead, then female, then the cubs, last by the alpha. This means that the most vulnerable sets the pace. This means we need to build for everyone. 5. Emma Wright – “[Investing in women startups] isn’t a female issue, this is a societal issue and an economic problem. If you invest in products by women, you will open up new markets and drive growth.” More great quotes and takeaways from this conference in the weeks ahead! Stay tuned! Thank you to all the amazing people I met, looking forward to building the world we want to see with you!
