"While the NBA has its own challenges when it comes to air travel and its carbon footprint, the league is also progressing forward with substantive changes, small and large, to assuage the climate crisis. And it’s in a unique position to do just that. Unlike anonymous research departments or lesser-known scientific organizations, the NBA is one of the most popular outfits in the world. It’s on the minds and lips of millions of people on a daily basis. This gives it the chance to manufacture change." https://lnkd.in/gnyDnFpD #Sustainability #NBA #ClimateAction 🏀🌱

1.2% of NBA players this season have the last name Green. It’s also the name of the league’s sustainability program 🟢 The National Basketball Association (NBA) has committed to reducing its emissions by 50% by 2030 🎯 One of its initiatives has been to make changes to the regular season calendar to minimise air travel between games 📅 When teams go to Los Angeles or New York, they are now more likely to play consecutive games against the Lakers and Clippers or the Nets and Knicks🏀 With these changes, 88 games were played during the 2022-2023 season without travel required, reducing team travel by 50,000 miles ✈️ Partnering with clever carbon, the NBA is also using its platform to educate fans about sustainability and drive climate action 🌍 #nba #sustainability #basketball #sports #climatechange #climateaction #environment #wavezero

Did you know that many football leagues distribute their TV rights revenue based not only on sports performance, but also on the club's environmental commitments? To assist the clubs registered on Planet Scout, we have developed a calculator that allows them to estimate the carbon footprint savings of their scouting activities 🌱 🔎 How does it work? The calculator, available on the club's dashboard, uses an algorithm based on data provided by the European Environment Agency to estimate the amount of CO₂ emissions saved from reduced flight distances when missions are assigned directly to a local scout. 💡 Why is it important? Several football leagues have created a points system where decarbonisation is highly rewarded (In the LFP - Ligue de Football Professionnel impacts 11% of the TV rights revenue distributed). The clubs currently using Planet Scout are not only contributing to a more sustainable future, but they are also making their finances healthier and stronger. Being ecologically responsible has become a strategic asset! Ready to make a positive impact in football? Send us a DM or reach out to us at hello@planetscout.app to learn more and get started 🚀

Football is setting up a bleak future 👇 ⛈ ⏱ But there is still time for it to be part of the solution. Football must use its immense social capital to show and tell people that change is needed, possible and happening. That means saying loud and clear that polluting companies are no longer welcome in our sport. As the consequences of climate crisis impact us all, the social licence of these big polluters will inevitably be cut off. But these corporations use football sponsorship to clean their image, push that date back and keep the profits flowing. Football will either act soon or be too late. Stop the sportswashing now before climate chaos stops the sport.

Women´s Football and Climate Change Football teams are feeling the impact of the climate crisis. Seventy percent of players from 36 different clubs surveyed in a report say that playing conditions are already affected by climate change. The report “Women´s Football and Climate Change: The Players´ Perspective” highlights the concerns of professional female footballers regarding climate change and the responsibility of the football industry to enact positive change. The report, a result of a project headed by the Planet League Ambassador Amy James-Turner of Tottenham Hotspur Women, calls for football clubs to use their influential cultural impact for greater environmental stewardship. Planet League mobilises football fans to take action. From the removal of single-use plastic water bottles to taking green modes of transport to matches, there is a lot that football clubs and their legion of fans can do to fight climate change. Planet League, for example, delivered a campaign by Arsenal and Ball Corporation called ‘The Green Gooners Cup’ earlier this year that encouraged Arsenal supporters to engage in a range of activities from choosing aluminium products, eating meat-free meals and reducing car use for short journeys. Prizes for these activities included meeting a men’s first-team player, watching a game from a box, and enjoying pitch-side access. #football #climatecrisis #climateaction #sustainability
