Tourism in Antarctica has been steadily growing until it was decided that tourist numbers would be limited. This is to protect the continent’s fragile eco-system. A new paper from my PhD, co-authored with Edward Huijbens, has just been published open access in Tourism Geographies! 🐧 🔍 In this paper, we explore the ongoing development of products, activities, and experiences in the rapidly expanding Antarctic tourism industry and their potential implications for the production of Antarctic places (and for the industry’s depiction of tourists as Antarctic ambassadors). Informed by theories of place and placelessness, we identify three particular place framings informed by Antarctic tourism diversification: the compression of time and space, the detachment of Antarctica from Earth, and the progressive consumption of wilderness through luxury and comfort. We argue that these dynamics may contribute to a detachment from the ways in which Antarctic places are situationally and materially assembled, leading to the abstraction, simplification, and obfuscation of socio-material relations making for a place.
