**Turning Challenges into Success** One year ago, we completed the successful installation, commissioning and startup of the BOBST FFG machine, a key milestone in our operations. Leading this project, I was responsible for overseeing the entire process from planning to execution. It was not without challenges. Technical issues, tight deadlines and coordinating multiple teams but by staying hands-on and focused, we were able to solve problems efficiently & get the machine up smoothly. This achievement is a testament to what strong teamwork and proactive leadership can accomplish. The Machine is well contributing to our production goals and setting a solid foundation for future growth. Looking back, I am proud of what we have accomplished together and it reminds me of the importance of staying focused & resilient when it counts. And it was talked about constantly by leadership. Simple. Now, improving quality and faster product release was the impetus to create systems like Material as Needed (MAN, the Harley brand of Just in Time, JIT). This lowered in-process inventory which forced operations to address quality issues and made it easier for change overs and new product introduction. How simple is your strategy? “We’re going to 5S the plant’” said the plant manager, bragging about their first weeklong improvement effort at the start of their Lean Transformation. Our start was different, it was about converting to One-Piece-Flow one product family. At the end of the week, we had a fully functional OPF cell working at Takt Time. Was it perfect? Of course not, but we worked through the challenges, sustained the gains and never returned to Batch & Queue. Even if the rest of the product families were still in Batch & Queue, at least we were heading in the right direction. That’s what I would call not perfect from the start but pointing into the right direction: getting out from Batch & Queue, Push and embracing Flow, Pull. Was this the case for the 5S effort? Not quite … at the end of the week, they certainly had a neater plant, but they were fundamentally still operating in Push and Batch & Queue for all their product families.
