📣 Looking for a fresh, critical take on digital technology in education? Meet Ruha Benjamin! 📚💡 Who is she? Ruha Benjamin is a renowned scholar in the fields of sociology and African American Studies. She is the author of groundbreaking books like "Race After Technology" and "Viral Justice: How We Grow the World We Want," which explore the ways technology can perpetuate inequality—and how we can design systems that promote inclusion and justice instead. What to know? In the rapidly evolving world of technology, it’s easy to get swept up in the excitement of innovation. But as we adopt new tools and systems, whose voices are left out? Ruha Benjamin, a sociologist and professor at Princeton University, is a trailblazer in answering this critical question. Her work shines a spotlight on how technology intersects with race, equity, and justice, making her an essential voice in the conversation about Learning Technologies. Why follow? Benjamin’s insights are transformative for anyone working in EdTech or Learning Technologies. Key themes of her work include: 🔸Equity by Design: Benjamin argues that fairness and inclusion must be baked into technology from the start, not added as an afterthought. 🔸The Hidden Bias in Tech: She reveals how algorithms and digital tools can reinforce existing inequalities if not carefully designed. 🔸Empowering Communities: Her research highlights how technology can uplift marginalized communities when developed with their needs and voices at the center. Follow Ruha Benjamin to explore how justice and innovation can go hand in hand. Are there other voices you'd like to spotlight? 🌍 Can Sustainable Educational Practices Help Achieve World Peace and Justice? 🌱 Education has always been a powerful tool for social change, but in today’s interconnected world, it holds the key to fostering lasting peace and justice. Sustainable educational practices—those that prioritize equity, inclusivity, and environmental stewardship—can create a ripple effect that goes beyond classrooms and into communities, nations, and even global relations. By teaching the next generation to think critically, act compassionately, and value sustainability, we are laying the foundation for a future where human rights are upheld, resources are managed responsibly, and conflicts are resolved through dialogue, not violence. ✅ Promoting Equality: Inclusive education ensures that no one is left behind, empowering marginalized voices and helping to reduce inequality. ✅ Fostering Empathy: By integrating global citizenship and social justice into curricula, students learn to understand diverse perspectives, which is vital for resolving conflicts peacefully. ✅ Encouraging Sustainable Solutions: Through environmental education, we instill values of sustainability and shared responsibility, addressing both climate change and global poverty. 🔍 The Role of AI: Artificial Intelligence can play a transformative role in sustainable education by personalizing learning, providing access to resources in underserved regions, and fostering global collaboration. AI-powered tools can offer tailored educational experiences, helping students develop the skills needed to address global challenges like climate change, inequality, and conflict resolution. Additionally, AI can drive data-driven insights, helping educators improve practices and policy, ensuring that sustainable education practices are effective and far-reaching. The future of peace and justice lies in the hands of educated, conscious individuals. Let’s invest in sustainable educational practices—supported by AI—that pave the way for a more harmonious and just world. #SustainableEducation #PeaceAndJustice #AIInEducation #GlobalCitizenship #InclusiveLearning #FutureOfEducation #Sustainability #GlobalPeace

Understanding social capital will only become more and more important as #artificialintelligence grows in workforce consumption. Thrilled to have been able to chat about my research with UCLA and the UCLA School of Education and Information Studies. A 150+ page dissertation is a lot to parse through, but this article and the attached brief get to the brass tacks of how we can better study and quantify students' social capital growth. (Thanks to John McDonald for the interview, and as always, Dr. Linda Sax and Dr. Kristen Rohanna for walking me through the dissertation process.)

The buzz of excitement for a new academic year is palpable here at CID, but before we welcome new students, faculty, staff, and fellows to campus, we are reflecting on and celebrating the many milestones reached during 2023-2024 as we dug into year two of our five-year strategy to build, convene, and deploy talent to build a thriving world for all. There is no question that we are at a crossroads in international development. New technologies and innovations offer opportunities – and challenges – to invest in communities to reach their full potential. New development aid paradigms centered on localized approaches can test well-established norms by redirecting power from wealthy countries to developing economies – or remain symbolic pledges. New resources from capital markets and development finance institutions can galvanize investments for sustainable development – if we can reimagine how to fund inclusive growth. At CID, we are inspired and humbled by our brilliant network of faculty affiliates, students, programs, and scholars across all Harvard schools. Read our Annual Letter to learn more about the important work we supported this past year through our sponsored research, events, student and fellow programming, and more. We are looking for new partners who share our vision. We invite you to learn more, share, engage, and join us! Read our Annual Letter: https://bit.ly/4dt1FYl Asim Ijaz Khwaja Fatema Z. Universities have always been centers of academic learning and research, but in the age of AI, do they need to be more? As usual, I have a lot of questions- Community Engagement: Universities need to deepen their ties with local communities. But how? What are real examples of programs that have truly created long lasting impact within the community? Innovative Partnerships: By partnering with businesses, nonprofits, and government entities, universities can help solve real-world problems and drive economic and social development. How can we more effectively bring these partners together? Lifelong Learning: As the job market rapidly evolves, universities will need to provide continuous education and upskilling opportunities to ensure that community members can thrive in an ever-changing landscape. Research with Impact: How do we better ensure that research aimed at addressing pressing societal issues actually turns into tangible solutions? I’m interested in hearing thoughts on this. #HigherEd #CommunityImpact #FutureOfEducation #Innovation #UniversityRole

In many instances, digital technologies challenge educational values mainly since the "future of education" is promoted by edtech industry that increasingly serve the commercial interests above the needs of educational communities. "Education is frequently positioned as a site of financial value extraction for technology markets." This is why 'algorithmic reparation', involving 'making amends for historical wrong-doing while ensuring these harms do not recur is an important framework both for addressing past injustices and for ‘future making’. And this why research centres in sociogital futures like this one is important.
The edtech industry is increasingly seen as prioritising commercial interests over the needs of educational communities, pushing sociodigital futures driven by industry. We explore alternative futures for the industry, taking different perspectives through the lenses of reparation, sovereignty, care and democratisation.
