South Africa🇿🇦 has made history as the first African country to assume the presidency of the G20, a powerful bloc of 19 countries, the European Commission, and the African Union. This significant milestone, which highlights Africa’s growing influence in global decision-making, officially begins on December 1, 2024, and will span a year. President Cyril Ramaphosa accepted the mantle from Brazil during the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, marking a pivotal moment not only for South Africa but for the continent as a whole. President Ramaphosa expressed his deep honour at assuming this leadership role on behalf of South Africans. In his address to G20 leaders, he emphasised the importance of bridging the gap between global decision-makers and the people whose lives their policies affect. “It is an honour to take over the G20 presidency for the next year on behalf of the people of my country,” he stated. He pledged to focus on making the presidency a platform driven by civil society, underscoring the necessity of inclusivity and dialogue in shaping international policies. Under South Africa’s presidency, the G20 is expected to prioritise pressing issues such as global economic stability, sustainable development, and equitable access to resources. As the bloc’s first African leader, Ramaphosa has an unprecedented opportunity to spotlight Africa’s challenges and opportunities, fostering a more balanced representation of the Global South in economic and political discourse. The African Union’s recent membership in the G20 further enhances this platform, reinforcing the continent’s role as a critical stakeholder in global affairs. ••• [Further Africa]

Brazil's G20 presidency highlights the potential of triangular cooperation as a transformative approach to global development. The concept deserves more attention, write Ulrich Mueller and Luiz Ramalho. It has the potential to break up neocolonial structures in institutions in favour of promoting global public goods and addressing today’s pressing challenges. #DevelopmentCooperation #G20Brazil #TriangularCooperation #Sustainability #GlobalPartnerships

The #G20 G20 South Africa #Think20 T20 South Africa engagement group, established in 2012, comprises prestigious think tanks and academic institutions from around the world. Operating independently from national governments, #T20 generates valuable policy proposals that are analyzed by high-level experts. These proposals add analytical depth to G20 discussions, helping leaders develop concrete, sustainable policy measures aligned with the priorities of the G20. The challenge for the T20 is to find consensus between competing interests among think tanks in the G20. The process will be challenging given the diverse #policy positions and agendas of participating think tanks, often reflecting the broader #geopolitical and #economic divides among G20 member countries. Bridging the divides will require a strategic approach that balances differing perspectives and priorities while focusing on shared goals. 🌍 Honoured to support South Africa's Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Dr Annelie Lotriet, at the 10th G20 Parliamentary Speakers’ Summit (P20) in Brasília, Brazil. The summit, themed “Parliaments for a just world and a sustainable planet,” proved to be an essential platform to discuss pressing global issues and the dynamic role of legislative bodies in our shared future. 🔔 Dr Lotriet, leading our delegation, emphasised the crucial role of parliaments in multilateral adherence with the UN at its core, promoting fair and inclusive global governance reform, driving Africa and the Global South’s prosperity, peace through dialogue, and sustainable development. 🌐 Through their mandates, which include law-making, executive oversight, budget approval, and voter representation in decision-making, G20 parliaments play a crucial role in fortifying the implementation of G20 decisions. Dr Lotriet also underscored the potential for G20 parliaments to address concerns over the G20s transparency and accountability, while also facilitating public access to the G20's work. 🇿🇦 South Africa's participation in the 10th P20 Summit showcased its commitment to critical global issues of sustainable development and global governance reform. Stay tuned for updates on Parliament's vision for the 2025 Summit! #southafrica #G20 #G20SouthAfrica #BetterAfricaBetterWorld

The G20 Brazil has come to an end and I had the mission of acting as the Sherpa for #C20 (C20), the official civil society engagement group at the G20 Brasil 2024. There were dozens of ministerial meetings, hundreds of speeches and many trips until we reached our final moment: handing over a robust set of recommendations to the Brazilian President and the G20 leaders. All of this was possible thanks to the collective effort of more than 1,700 global civil society organizations, representing 91 countries. In a global scenario of attacks on rights, democracy and to civil spaces, the C20 recognizes the commitment of the Brazilian Government to promote the social participation in the G20. However, as we have been warning for a long time, intergovernmental declarations still fail to effectively address the multiple crises we face and, more importantly, to implement the commitments they made at the United Nations. Now, the work continues with the presidency of South Africa and we will stand side by side with our CSO colleagues and the other Engagement Groups, in defense of sustainable development, with a rights-based and anti-racist approaches and, always through an intersectional gender perspective Governments come and go, but civil society will remain vigilant, monitoring and advocating for #LeavingnoOneBehind.

Latin America took center stage in global affairs this month as world leaders visited Brazil and Peru for the Leaders’ Summit of the Group of Twenty (G20) and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum. It did so, however, as disparate national priorities among the region’s G20 members—Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico—stood in the way of articulating a common regional agenda:
