It’s the time of year when many of us look back at the achievements and challenges of the year gone by and start to look ahead at next year’s plans and opportunities. This year, we have seen an increased focus on how our growing cities build the resilience to protect against flooding and maintain safe and secure water and sanitation networks. More cities, companies and organisations are joining and deepening the conversation, which will continue next year. We will also see more cities taking practical steps to advance their water resilience. This requires collective and concerted effort across government bodies, academia, the public sector, private sector, NGOs, and communities. This graphic shows ‘5 imperatives’ for cities to consider, drawn from ‘Advancing Urban Water Resilience through Multilevel Governance: a collaborative call to action’ (see link in comments). Developed in partnership with Arup, Resilient Cities Network, Deltares, High-Level Climate Champions, The Race to Resilience, The Race To Zero and the Sharm El Sheikh Adaptation Agenda (SAA). 🌍 COP29 Climate Summit: Building Climate Resilient Cities 🌍 As COP29 unfolds in Baku, it’s clear that cities are at the forefront of the global climate resilience challenge. With over half the global population living in urban areas, the impacts of climate change—rising seas, extreme weather, and heatwaves—are felt most profoundly in our cities. But these challenges are also sparking groundbreaking innovations, including affordable floating solutions, with positive ecological and social impacts, that reimagine how cities can thrive amidst rapid change.. In the book Climate Resilient Urban Areas: Governance, Design, and Development in Coastal Delta Cities (Palgrave MacMillan), Henk Ovink and I outline 5 pillars of climate resilience that form the foundation for tackling urban climate threats: 1️⃣ Threshold Capacity: Preventing damage, e.g., with flood levees. 2️⃣ Coping Capacity: Managing extreme events to reduce harm. 3️⃣ Recovery Capacity: Bouncing back stronger after disasters. 4️⃣ Adaptive Capacity: Preparing for uncertain futures. 5️⃣ Transformative Capacity: Creating systemic change for a resilient society. Resilience isn’t just about technical solutions—it’s holistic. From leveraging local and indigenous knowledge to optimizing urban infrastructure and transforming governance systems, we need a systems approach. This means scaling innovations, fostering collaborations, and empowering communities. The book draws from global insights, with a strong focus on coastal cities like those in the Netherlands, offering inspiration and experience for resilience that is as diverse as the challenges we face. Beyond technical innovations, the book emphasizes holistic approaches: leveraging indigenous knowledge, optimizing infrastructure, and transforming governance systems to scale up resilience globally. As discussions continue at COP29, let’s work together to strengthen these pillars and build a future where cities not only survive but thrive in the face of climate change. 🌿 📘 Interested? 🌍 COP29 Climate Summit: Building Climate Resilient Cities (#2) 🌍 Yesterday, I posted about how to build climate resilience in urban areas and introduced the 5 Pillars of Climate Resilience. Today, we will dive a bit deeper into these critical 5 Pillars of Climate Resilience. We we also elaborate how floating communities can contribute to these 5 Pillars. This framework, which I developed together with Henk Ovink and is rooted in years of research and practical applications, highlights five interconnected capacities that cities must develop to thrive in the face of climate uncertainties: 1️⃣ Threshold Capacity: Strengthening defenses through infrastructure like dikes and reservoirs, paired with nature-based solutions that protect and regenerate ecosystems. 2️⃣ Coping Capacity: Equipping cities with emergency plans, early warning systems, and risk communication strategies to mitigate immediate damage. 3️⃣ Recovery Capacity: Ensuring rapid and sustainable recovery after disasters, incorporating resilience into rebuilding efforts. 4️⃣ Adaptive Capacity: Anticipating future risks by embracing innovative technologies and flexible, forward-thinking planning. 5️⃣ Transformative Capacity: Enabling systemic change through collaboration, inclusivity, and catalytic solutions that redefine urban resilience. How do Floating Communities contribute to the 5 Pillars? Floating communities are an example of a key urban innovation which strengthen all five capacities simultaneously: 🌊 Threshold Capacity: Floating structures adapt to rising water levels, preventing damage from floods. 🌊 Coping Capacity: Modular designs and off-grid systems ensure functionality during emergencies. Floating structures can also perform as flood shelter during floods. 🌊 Recovery Capacity: Floating communities can be repaired or reconfigured quickly, minimizing downtime after disasters. 🌊 Adaptive Capacity: These communities are inherently flexible, allowing for adjustments to future climate scenarios. 🌊 Transformative Capacity: By integrating sustainability, renewable energy, and inclusive design, floating communities redefine how we approach urban living in vulnerable areas. 📌 My Key Message for COP29: Cities must move beyond incremental solutions to embrace bold, transformative strategies. By integrating these pillars—and pioneering innovations like floating communities—we can create urban environments that withstand shocks while fostering sustainable growth. I am excited to share this framework and encourage dialogue among leaders, policymakers, and practitioners to drive collective action. How can these ideas inspire your city’s approach to resilience? Let me know! 💡 #COP29 #ClimateResilience #UrbanSustainability #TransformativeChange #FloatingSolutions Source: The Five Pillars of Climate Resilience https://lnkd.in/dkdsKnUf
