The Biden administration is urging Congress to prioritize funding for election security and presidential transition efforts, even if a government funding deal isn't reached for fiscal 2025. In an unprecedented move, the White House is also pushing for the Social Security Administration (SSA) to receive funding at the proposed $15.4 billion rate, instead of the current $14.2 billion, to ensure uninterrupted operations. "Without such an anomaly, the agency’s operations would continued to be funded at its current annual appropriation of $14.2 billion under a continuing resolution." Social Security COLA for 2025 could be 2.6%. That doesn't compare well to 2023's 8.7%. Obviously, that can have a major impact on Election 2024. The over-65 account for 18% of the population and seniors tend to vote. Why they vote is primarily to protect Social Security and Medicare. https://lnkd.in/gTPka6cp #SocialSecurityCOLA #Election2024

The Wall Street Journal editorial board has an important piece on the so-called “Social Security Fairness Act” and its nearly $200 billion cost. The bill--which has passed the House with bipartisan support and is about to be brought up in the Senate--would repeal longstanding provisions designed to prevent individuals who spent part of their careers working for certain state and local governments from receiving disproportionately large Social Security benefits. Now, it's worth noting that there are reasonable concerns about these provisions being unfair, poorly communicated, and outdated. But in contrast to reform, outright repeal would create further inequities in the system and be costly for a program that is already facing a massive financing shortfall. The current debate highlights the need for constructive solutions that ensure Social Security remains fair, sustainable, and focused on those who need it most. https://lnkd.in/ejjgKPHS #SocialSecurity
