What a ridiculous situation🙏🙏! IISc, despite being ranked #1 overall in India, has fallen to 50th in "research quality," in India trailing behind universities like LPU!! It's disheartening to see IISc participate in Times Higher Education rankings, which clearly show bias. Like the IITs (minded administration), IISc administration should also boycott such rankings. As someone like me who graduated from NIT, it's surprising to see it ranked higher than IISc in research quality. IISc administration need to understand that "The lion does not need to prove his strength; true power lies in the confidence of his presence." I urge the scientific community (quality ones) to reject these flawed rankings. ⚠️⚠️Please keep in mind: This issue goes beyond IISc; it affects everyone who genuinely cares about research in India. You could feel the aura soon as you enter IISC, and paint it pure research. Most IIT/IIMs give me a transactional vibe — the campus is good, students are brilliant, and they will all come out successfully placed in faang, or wall street, making millions, travelling the world, and securing good lifestyle for two generations. Good, good. But then there are two educational campuses which has given me a different vibe of life energies: Verghese Kurien’s IRMA and Tata’s IISC. It was happenstance — Jamsetji Tata and Swami Vivekananda were travelling in the same ship from Japan to America in 1895, and Vivekananda suggested that India needs to learn science and technological acumen from the west and there needs to be one such research center to inspire the youth. Jamsetji Tata promised to think about it and five years after his death, the institute came into existence in 1909. If you are planning to visit, the best time of the year is probably the Open Day event which happens somewhere in Feb. last week. Let’s hope more funding pours in from corporates, as basic research continues to get devoured by applied research day by day. For world to survive, pure research needs to survive. Researchers need to survive. In 21st century, passion needs economic wings.

Research >>> ego The first thing #iisc—or any prestigious institute—does is challenge your ego. Everyone arrives as a topper from somewhere. I still remember my first-year exam at IISc, where the highest-mark question simply asked us to "write a question and answer of your choice." Many of us thought it was an easy way to score, but ironically, most of us lost the maximum marks on this question. It wasn't just a question; it was a life lesson in disguise: in research, you must identify the problem and discover a novel solution on your own, but the journey won't be easy. Often, the challenges or state-of-the-art can be more daunting than anticipated. The reward may not be as expected. Yet, through this research journey at IISc, we learn what it truly means to be "strong." As Bob Marley said, "You never know how strong you are until being strong is your only choice." Debate Day at IISC Berlin Campus! Our campus was buzzing with energy and enthusiasm as our students engaged in a thought-provoking debate on the topic: "Society doesn’t allow men to be emotionally vulnerable - agree or disagree?" Our students worked diligently in teams, discussing strategies and preparing their arguments with great dedication. Our teacher Ms. Rohini Vijayan provided invaluable instructions and support, helping students hone their debating skills and build strong, persuasive arguments. The debate kicked off with students eagerly presenting their views, showcasing their excitement and thorough preparation. The level of engagement and the quality of the arguments were truly inspiring. As the debate progressed, students challenged each other with well-thought-out rebuttals, demonstrating critical thinking and a deep understanding of the topic.
