Alexandra Chassanoff has great thoughts on digital archiving - It's a niche topic, but think about it: how do we keep records and references to this Leviathan of digital data? Do we just rely on the volunteer Internet Archive to do it? No way! They're important, but we need much much more than that. Just think about how much paper historical records are still vital to understanding the world around us. We need the same thing for digital archives! So if you understand this, check out Alex's work!
I am recruiting 1-2 PhD students at the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill to work with me as graduate research assistants (GRAs) beginning in Fall 2025. GRA positions will support IMLS-funded research on capacity-building efforts for born-digital stewardship and communities of practice. Preferred applicants will have knowledge and interest in one of the following content areas: born-digital archives; digital preservation; ethnographic, participatory and/or collective action research methods. To learn more about this opportunity, please reach out to me directly: achass@unc.edu To learn more about the UNC-SILS doctoral program: https://lnkd.in/dpQiXXhb Feel free to share with your networks!

An interesting discussion from the incomparable Professor Brabazon about long PhD candidatures. Overwhelmingly, the students that have long and complicated candidatures, or just don’t finish, are non-males, students with disability, and Indigenous students. Ability is a non-factor: it seems to be a deeply rooted problem within the systems of academia itself, and wider sociocultural expectations (and challenges) of people in certain demographics which can often get in the way of a smooth research process. #PhD #Academia #Candidature #research
It is tough. Often debilitating. A student is enrolled in a PhD for a long time. Blame cultures form. Formal proceedings follow. What happens now? Our Post this week provides concrete strategies to enable a completion, after a long candidature. Here we go. And PS - apologies for the state of my eyes! Long work days at the moment :) https://lnkd.in/gKSsbYgR
