I realized that I share about my business, but I don’t often share about the actual work that I do with my clients (and the key word is WITH. The most successful client relationships are collaborative). This is one project I’ve been working on with Business in the Streets: capturing and sharing stories of participants and alumni (all inspiring young entrepreneurs!). So proud of what we’ve done together and excited for what’s to come! #clients #fundraising #consulting #smallbusiness #entrepreneurs #success #storytelling #nonprofits #charities
At the end of our last cohort, we met with a few alumni to learn more about their stories; who they were before coming to BITS and who they hope to be after. One of the people we were really lucky to speak with was Kedesha Kondell, founder of Kondell Business Services and Adult Development and Management Center. Her business is run as a social enterprise that sells resumes and cover letters, then uses the profits to offer free jobs skills training to new immigrants or individuals with disabilities. She started her business after observing a need in her community and realizing that she could use her background and expertise to address that need. But when she started feeling overwhelmed, she came to us for help. And we're so glad she did! We've seen her come through both YCEO and Boot Camp and we can't wait to see where she takes her business next. Listen to a small clip of our conversation below. #SmallBusinessSupport #NonProfit

I applied for two job pool postings back in September 2023. One was for a mid-career level role and the other was for a senior level role. The senior level role's salary range started in the 6 figures. The company wanted to have a pool of candidates who were qualified for the roles so that when they are ready to hire, they have the talent to choose from. The process also included passing an exam (typing, MS Excel) and writing questionnaire. With my resume looking very sparse, I first skipped over these job postings because I didn't think that I would even get a chance. I have the experience and the knowledge just not the longevity with an employer, which is probably the number one reason why I have yet to be hired. But something in me said "apply anyway, don't downplay yourself!", so I applied. A month later, I get an email saying that my applications were screened and I was eligible to proceed to the next round which was the exam. In order to make it to the next round, I would have to get a cumulative score of 70% or higher on each section of the test. I took both exams and waited. I sometimes do okay on these types of tests but being out of work for so long makes my nerves bad so I end up not doing so well. But I was confident that I did my best. Another month passes and I'm informed that I have passed both exams! Phew, what a relief! But the thing I dreaded the most, writing, was up next. There were 4 questions that I had to answer in 500 words or less and both positions had their own set of questions. I had about a week and a half to complete it. Now, I could have just said "fck it" and quit. I've done it before because my anxiety with writing literally gives me panic attacks. Especially in a test or application setting. Even writing on LinkedIn or Substack is hard for me! But I did it (and I'm doing it, still!). Everything was riding on this. I got an email at the beginning of February informing me that I made it to the candidate pool for BOTH roles. Which means that I could be considered for an interview whenever they have a position open. I cried so hard that day. I know it isn't a job offer, but knowing that I am in a candidate pool for a SENIOR LEVEL POSITION WITH A SIX-FIGURE STARTING SALARY was the best news ever! A girl who has holes the size of Texas in her resume can be considered for a six-figure STARTING salary. Me! I think about this every time I get discouraged or try to apply to roles that are lower than my capabilities. As long as I believe in myself, anything is possible! ****************************** I am accepting REPARATIONS payments as a BENEFICIARY of the 2024 hashtag #BuyBLACKJuneteenth Reparations Race Campaign taking place between June 19-30. Recently I’ve been spending time with students at BCP career and apprenticeship show and alumni events. Many of the students seek support and encouragement with their career decisions. Parents play a key role in influencing their children's career decisions, although they may feel they might not always have the confidence to have those important career conversations. Hope these ideas helps … “A great way to bridge these important conversation topics is by doing an activity together, like preparing a meal. So, I thought this would be the perfect thing to demonstrate in the content with Talking Futures – as it’s something I also did a lot on Blue Peter!” “I think it’s important for parents to get into the habit of having career conversations regularly. “Time flies and it’s good to know what your kids are thinking early on. You don’t necessarily have to define a certain pathway but explore the various possibilities so that they know what’s out there.” In recent years the provision for careers support in schools has greatly improved and every school is measured annually through Gatsby benchmarks. Please Check out your childrens /students school website on careers support (it should be 2 clicks to careers for students and parents) to enable you and your student to learn more. Please continue these great conversations to create opportunities to have these career chats with your children.

Resume Tip: Document what you did, not what you do. How do you do this? Write in past tense and quanitfy. For instance, instead of: ✖️Increase outreach and awareness by building partnerships and continuous distribution of flyers at local businesses, nonprofit organizations, churches, schools, and community events. Do: ✅Successfully built strategic partnerships and increased outreach and brand awareness by [insert %]. Instead of: ✖️Responsible for obtaining and managing new clients and referral sources and the retention of current Wells Fargo clients. Do: ✅Obtained [insert number] new clients, increasing client portfolio by [insert percentage] while retaining current clientele. Speak about what you did. By focusing on what you did, you lead with your impact as opposed to your daily tasks. Companies want to know your impact. They want to know how will you benefit them? Focus on your results. #thecareergem #resumewriter #resumetips
