Low-temperature electrochemical production of iron powder for carbon-free energy storage The energy transition requires sustainable actions with efficient, carbon-free energy storage being crucial to managing the intermittent nature of renewable power sources. A promising candidate for energy storage is iron powder. Applying electrolysis for iron production from an iron oxide suspension in aqueous electrolytes is a novel ‘green’ way that has no CO2 or particle emissions, low energy consumption, directly uses (renewable) electricity, and eliminates the intermediate step of producing a ‘green’ reducing agent (i.e., hydrogen). For his PhD research, Akmal Irfan Majid explored the feasibility of this method for generating iron powder fuel by analyzing the underlying physics and (electro)chemical processes. I am thrilled to announce the publication of my latest research as the first author in the Proceedings of the 9th International Symposium on Hydrogen Energy, Renewable Energy, and Materials (HEREM 2023), part of the Springer Proceedings in Physics series. Title: Investigation of Factors that Affect the Ammonia Production Rate in the Pyrolysis of Urea Solution. This study explored critical factors such as temperature, urea-water concentration, carrier gas capacity, and hot air flow that influence ammonia production during urea pyrolysis. Our findings revealed key insights into optimizing ammonia yield. 💡 Highlights: 1. Temperature significantly boosts ammonia production. 2. Urea solution concentrations between 35%-50% optimize performance, while higher concentrations reduce yields. 3. Steady carrier gas flow ensures ammonia production rates of 98%-100%. 4. Higher hot air flow enhances heat input, meeting pyrolysis requirements efficiently. This research offers valuable insights for optimizing ammonia production processes, which are pivotal in applications like selective catalytic reduction (SCR) for NOx emission control and as a fertilizer feedstock. By identifying optimal operating conditions, the study bridges the gap between laboratory-scale experimentation and industrial application. Proposition de sujet de thèse: The objective of this doctoral thesis is to develop new modeling and control techniques for renewable energy systems. In the first part of this thesis, the student must conduct modeling and simulations to compare the results. In the final stage, the doctoral student must simulate and then implement the findings in an embedded system to create a real prototype.

🚀 Exciting New Chapter: Master's Thesis in Steam Methane Reforming (SMR) Research 🚀 I’m thrilled to announce that I’ve officially started my master’s thesis at the chair of the Energy Process Engineering (EVT, Energieverfahrenstechnik), FAU, exploring Steam Methane Reforming (SMR) to develop a new, scalable, and energy-efficient reactor design. This work aligns with the need for clean energy and sustainable process innovations, particularly in hydrogen and syngas production. 🌱 My thesis focuses on creating an SMR reactor concept and implementation of a pilot setup with high adaptability, allowing for output flexibility from low conversion power to high production capacity. Thanks to #DudgeonOffshoreWindFarm, EEEGR (East of England Energy Group) and East Norfolk Sixth Form College #Gorleston for inviting Geothermal Development Company - CeraPhi Energy to join the #GreenHydrogen Competition for Schools consortium of Industry Partners including Equinor Ellie Haddon, Opergy Group Andy Holyland, Suzanne Allen (Greening) Hydrogen East, Holly Harvey-Perdicou and over 70 #Chemistry, #Physics and #Engineering Students. The project is designed to teach students about the various methods of hydrogen production, including through electrolysis using green energy, which is already part of the #GCSE science curriculum. The goal being to create a 2-hour lesson that not only explains how hydrogen is produced but also connects it to career opportunities, especially in the East of England, where projects like Bacton Energy Hub are being developed. I'm excited to share one of the research projects I undertook during my master's program in Systems Engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology. This project, conducted through the Laboratory for Intelligent Integrated Networks of Engineering Systems (LIINES) under the guidance of Professor Farid, focused on the sustainable energy transition and the hydrogen economy. Our research leveraged the Argonne National Laboratory's GREET model to challenge several assumptions within the model. We developed multiple case studies to assess the true life cycle impacts of hydrogen production, with a particular focus on electrolyzer stacks utilizing grid energy. We also incorporated Electricity Maps into the case studies, which provided real-time disaggregate emissions data for various regions in the United States. This enabled us to accurately model the time-varying carbon intensity associated with hydrogen production. One of our key case studies examined the potential for these stacks to take advantage of the clean hydrogen production tax credit, which incentivizes clean hydrogen production with up to $3.00 per kilogram of clean hydrogen. Our findings suggest that hydrogen technologies, such as electrolyzers, can significantly enhance their environmental performance through "carbon-friendly" scheduling. This research underscores the importance of refining life cycle models in the context of real-time operations, providing valuable insights for the adoption of sustainable energy technologies. On September 5, U.S. Sen. James Lankford visited The University of Tulsa College of Engineering and Computer Science to review their cutting-edge hydrogen blending project. This research, taking place at UTulsa’s North Campus, focuses on integrating hydrogen into natural gas pipelines to help reduce carbon emissions. By substituting a portion of methane with hydrogen, which burns cleanly without CO2, the project aims to advance sustainable energy solutions. 🌍💨 Sen. Lankford received an update from Cem SARICA, the Floyd M. Stevenson Distinguished Presidential Chair in Petroleum Engineering, and observed a live demonstration. Andreas A. Polycarpou, Dean of Engineering & Computer Science at UTulsa, praised the university’s role: “The University of Tulsa has unique equipment and facilities to explore solutions to complex problems within the energy industry. A company in need of relatively quick test results can come to us, and we have the infrastructure in place to respond.” The research is in partnership with Sagebrush Equipment, a prominent pipeline industry leader. Sagebrush CEO Tom Blair commented, “Hydrogen blending is a hot topic for many of our customers. We approached TU two years ago, and we have already completed phase one of the testing. Energy faculty and staff from the Georgia Tech School of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering were awarded the Outstanding Achievement in Research Program Development 2024 from the Georgia Tech EVPR, for their work on the UNCAGE-ME research program. UNCAGE-ME (the Center for Understanding and Control of Acid Gas-Induced Evolution of Materials for Energy) was stablished in 2014, as one of 10 new Energy Frontier Research Centers (EFRCs) and financed with a four-year $11.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). In 2018, the U.S. DOE renewed funding for UNCAGE-ME with an additional $12 million. And in 2022, the DOE renewed funding for UNCAGE-ME with an additional $13.2 million through 2026. The focus of the UNCAGE-ME EFRC is to advance the understanding of how porous and electrochemical materials used for hydrogen production and carbon dioxide capture and conversion evolve and degrade when exposed to emerging contaminants. In the course of #energy transition #innovative approaches to efficient storage of energy is needed. A way to make great use of renewable energy is chemical storage. The method of Power-to-Methanol Technology (#PtM) is a great way to produce #methanol out of #hydrogen from electrolysis and carbondioxide through gentle and decarbonizing #carboncapture utilization. An efficient and selective #catalyst for the methanol synthesis is #nickel-indiumoxide. The characterization of the surface composition and the structure of Ni/In2O3 catalysts using various analytical methods such as in-situ X-ray diffraction (#XRD), N2 physisorption (#BET) and N2O-temperature programmed desorption (#TPD) is the topic of my bachelor's thesis. I am very happy to announce that my thesis at the chair of technical chemistry at Technische Universität München has been submitted not too long ago and has been graded with 1,0 (A+). Also I am very thankful for the extensive support and helpful advice from my supervisor Tabea Gros and the warm welcome by the entire working group of the TC I chair!
