You might assume that older tenement buildings lose a lot of heat through their walls in comparison to newer buildings, but recent research suggests that traditional solid stone or brick walls provide better insulation than was once thought. However, there are several ways you can insulate the outer walls of your building. Find out more👇 https://lnkd.in/d5_2FejD #ScottishTenement #Insulation

Slab-on-Grade Foundations Slab-on-grade foundations are essential in residential construction, providing a stable base for homes. This foundation involves pouring a single layer of concrete directly onto the ground, offering support and stability. Advantages: Cost-Effective and Simple Installation: Lower labor, material, and excavation costs. Quick construction timelines. Level Surface for Construction: Uniform, flat surface for easy wall and flooring installation. Minimizes risk of uneven settling. Ideal for Stable Soil Conditions: Suited for areas with stable soil and minimal frost. Reduces settlement or instability risk. Disadvantages: Limited to Single-Story Structures: Not suitable for multi-story buildings. Restricts design options for larger homes. Susceptible to Cracking and Heaving: Can crack in regions with expansive soils or frost. Requires proper site preparation and moisture control. Applications: Ideal for homes, garages, workshops, and small commercial buildings without basements. Popular for their simplicity and cost-effectiveness. Metal buildings are unique in the way they are insulated. A typical metal building insulation application includes an exposed vapor retarder facing the interior of the building because that is usually the warm side of the structure. https://lnkd.in/gmMyimus

High-rise timber buildings? Discussion of concrete vs wood for "inter-floor noise" but not much about the combustibility of wood vs concrete. I would have some serious questions about the treating of this structure for fire safety.

Another Velox System deployed in a subterranean development. Earth keeps the houses cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. The thermal mass (concrete core in the walls and ceiling/flat roof) keeps the temperature stable and prevents homes from overheating. These properties are designed to maintain certain temperatures and usually set to maintain 21’C. The concrete (thermal mass) reduces spikes in temperature inside of Velox homes during the day/night which is commonly experienced within timber frame buildings. Massive house design works by itself with minimum energy demand to keep it warm or cool during the year. All you need is a well designed MVHR system to maintain the fresh air distribution and some form of heat source (solar panels, air source heat pump, log burner etc). #construction #icf #concrete #architects
