Mayors for Economic Growth #M4EG is a joint initiative of the European Union and UNDP. This initiative invites a rethink of cities’ economies, spaces, and processes to achieve positive changes and focus on modern trends. It was launched in 2017 for local authorities as part of the EU’s Eastern Partnership initiative. The current phase of the program is being implemented by UNDP. In Ukraine, it is represented in 20 municipalities. By the end of April 2024, 8 initiatives are marked as completed and provide tangible improvements for the communities, for example: ✔️ Nizhyn City established the municipal sewing workshop creating 30 new jobs for IDPs. ✔️ Based on the Bucha Consultative and Diagnostic Center, a comprehensive rehabilitation department was opened in Bucha City. ✔️ A dormitory has been opened in Hlukhiv City to provide shelter for 80 internally displaced people. ✔️ Lviv received an educational space to conduct retraining/upskilling programs for local internally displaced persons. ✔️ The greenhouse for growing microgreens has been set up in Slavuta City. ✔️ The Training and Consulting Center for Business was launched in the City of Trostianets. ✔️ As part of the project, the frontline village of Velyka Oleksandrivka in Kherson Oblast received assistance in restoring administrative and public services. ✔️ A municipal resource center to support IDPs was launched in Kamianets-Podilskyi. We expect that during 2024, M4EG projects will be completed in other 12 cities! In the meantime, learn more about M4EG's mission and approaches in this video: #UNDPEUpartnership

Join us in congratulating our Director on his recent summit of Africa’s highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro. Leonard Kitoka’s successful climb, proudly carrying the TangaYetu programme’s banner to the top of Africa, reminds us that with dedication and perseverance, we can overcome any challenge, no matter how steep it may seem. TangaYetu is a programme implemented under the ‘OurCity Initiative’ by Fondation Botnar, which aims to support selected cities around the world. Fondation Botnar focuses on leveraging digital technologies and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to transform cities into places where young people’s wellbeing and opportunities are secured. The initiative collaborates with young people, Tanga City Council, civil societies, policymakers, innovators, and other city champions to nurture wellbeing and opportunity for the citizens of Tanga. Driven by local-level programming, TangaYetu addresses problems caused by urbanization, resulting in young people’s struggle to meet their needs, urban poverty, and social exclusion. Specifically, TangaYetu aims to address four challenges: urbanization, unemployment, capacity for evidence-informed decisions, and access to quality social services. TangaYetu is currently implemented by INNOVEX working together with various partners to create a brighter future for the youth in Tanga.

When we turned our mind to cities during the onset of COVID 19, our objective was to support the UNDP’s strategic attention to cities as agents of development and transformational initiatives. Since then, we have supported a dozen of #cities on the ground in addressing their core challenges through an innovative #portfolioapproach. Since then, we have evolved our methodology to fit the social context and needs of small cities to help them broaden their sense of agency and role in local development - from being the regulator to the innovator, from protecting scarce resources to attracting and redefining new value, from administering businesses to seeding entrepreneurial ecosystems. Just recently, the city of #Kapan in #Armenia has started to activate some of the Options of the #Community Resilience Portfolio which we had co-designed. The Portfolio contains small probes, initiatives and seed investments to diversify the business environment, strengthen the social fabric and create new growth and entrepreneurial opportunities to attract and support local youth: A new strategic direction and energy for Kapan who as a small city in a border region has been dealing with protracted crisis. We congratulate the Community Leaders for Economic Development and their newly opened Pan-Armenian International Business Club as the 15th branch of the Mantashyants Business Unit and hope that it attracts new resources, generates new connections with established business ecosystems and new learnings on how young #entrepreneurs can be supported by the municipality.
