Back in 2001, this work to me was the most interesting thing in the world and it stuck with me for all these years! Its why I became a Developer of renewable energy. 🍃 🌿 #Finance (and carbon markets) will be front and centre at #COP29. Developing countries urgently need support to accelerate the transition to clean energy and deal with the impacts of climate change. 👥 At the 19th Annual UK Sustainable Infrastructure Summit, the CCSA’s CEO, Olivia Powis, joined an expert panel to discuss "Realising the Potential Contribution of Carbon Capture & Storage". Olivia was joined by: ▪ Chris Thackeray, CCS Lead, Baringa ▪Ruth Herbert MPhys FEI Herbert, Managing Director, EET Fuels ▪James Eyton CEng MIMechE, Head of CCUS, Viridor 🌍 This discussion took place on the 2nd day of COP29 Azerbaijan, highlighting the urgent challenges ahead in addressing climate change. 💡 Key Insights from Olivia’s Remarks: ▪ The Prime Minister’s commitment to reducing emissions by 81% by 2035 demonstrates the UK’s leadership in tackling the climate crisis and underscores the critical role of CCUS in achieving net zero. ▪ The UK is on the cusp of CCUS deployment, with significant progress made in the past three years to develop world-leading legislative and regulatory frameworks. ▪ Recent government funding commitments for Track-1 projects ensure they can reach financial close, providing a strong signal to investors about the robustness of the UK’s CCUS industry. ▪ With Track-2 and additional projects across the UK ready to move forward, CCUS presents a unique opportunity to meet 2030 decarbonisation targets while attracting substantial private investment. 🌡 Olivia also highlighted that 2024 is projected to breach 1.5°C warming, reinforcing the urgency of deploying solutions like CCUS to mitigate climate impacts. 👥 A big thank you to our fellow panellists for their valuable insights, and to the organisers for facilitating this timely discussion. 🌍 We need industry to #BeBoldOnBuildings at COP29 Azerbaijan! Countries are currently in the process of creating their updated climate action plans (#NDCs) to cut emissions and adapt to climate impacts as part of the Paris Agreement. How can industry #BeBoldOnBuildings and help drive the change needed? 🏗️ Advocate for 1.5C aligned #NDCs that have clear and ambitious, sector-specific policies for the #builtenvironment and provide confidence to government that such clarity will lead to long term economic investment. 💻 Publish corporate transition plans aligned with 1.5C and work with local Green Building Councils to create #decarbonisation and resilience roadmaps. ♻️ Communicate progress, share best practices and collaborate across #supplychains to invest in #sustainable solutions and deliver on decarbonisation and resilience roadmaps. Here at Darwin International, we’ve recently been digesting an article from McKinsey & Company that you may have seen in your feed. In “The energy transition: Where are we, really?” (link in the comments 👇), the authors examine the reality of momentum in various critical spaces for decarbonization, looking at how rapidly the ‘rubber is hitting the road’ on the journey to net zero. Global ambitions in terms of announced climate targets and commitments contrast in sobering manner with what deployment roadmaps look most likely to deliver “at least at current course and speed”. ➡ This highlights once again the imperative to accelerate the pace of change and radically shorten the timeframes from innovation through to implementation and, ultimately, impact. ➡ Taking action to sufficiently accelerate the energy transition and reliably reach NDCs calls for stakeholder alignment in the round, including finding creative and equitable ways to unlock and deploy capital, as well as unleashing the innovation and delivery potential business can uniquely offer to scale solutions. Before we know it, it will be time for COP 30 in Bélem – a full decade after the ground-breaking Paris agreement. Today, Alice Bond, WorldGBC’s Policy Research and Engagement Manager joined a panel today in the Blue Zone at COP29 Azerbaijan to talk about climate action plans and WorldGBC’s NDC Scorecard tool.
