ESG stands for Environmental, Social, and Governance, a critical aspect of sustainability. The session was enriched by insights from keynote speaker, Rhythm Sanghi, Associate in the ESG Team at Bain & Company. 📊💼 3rd SDGs Insights: analyzing portfolios Back when I worked at Enactus Brasil, we coordinated a portfolio of over 200 social impact projects across the country. Each project aligned with at least one United Nations` Sustainable Development Goal (SDG), helping us balance the portfolio and identify areas where new partnerships were needed for funding, capacity-building, or launching new initiatives. Shifting from the non-profit context to the corporate world, assessing the positive and negative impacts of an organization and its value chain is equally essential. This evaluation helps uncover opportunities, gain competitive advantages, and mitigate risks. A 2023 study analyzed a portfolio of 8,089 organizations in developed and emerging markets, part of the MSCI ACWI IMI Index. The graph below simplifies how these companies' products, services, and operations either positively (aligned) or negatively (misaligned) contribute to the SDGs. For example, a company generating most of its revenue from tobacco sales would be strongly misaligned with SDG 3 (#GoodHealth and #Well-being), while a sanitation services company would be strongly aligned. The SDGs with the highest alignment rates were: • SDG 5 (#GenderEquality): 36.1%, • SDG 8 (#DecentWork and #EconomicGrowth): 18.5%. On the flip side, the SDGs with the highest misalignment were: • SDG 7 (#Affordable and #CleanEnergy): 6.4%, • SDG 12 (#ResponsibleConsumption and #Production): 7%, • SDG 13 (#ClimateAction): 6.3%. The misalignment can largely be attributed to the presence of energy companies that generate revenue from fossil fuels. In contrast, alignment with these goals often comes from companies involved in green energy or low-carbon solutions. Regionally, the Americas recorded the only negative score in the Environmental category, due to the higher proportion of energy companies. Finally, SDG 14 (#LifeBelowWater) at 0.3% and SDG 15 (#LifeonLand) at 0% had limited alignment, reflecting a lack of corporate focus on these areas.
