During these 16 days of action against gender-based violence, I urge us all to ask these important questions. Individuals - who in our lives may need support? - do we know the signs? can we name what actions or behaviors are gendered violence? - do we know any local resources if someone may need them? - can I volunteer or support? - can I role model consent? - can I leverage my privilege and encourage others to prevent and respond to gender-based violence and harassment? Organizations - do we have gender-based violence prevention and response policies that prioritize survivor centric principles? - do we have transparent domestic and family violence paid leave policies? - have we used a gender equity framework when building our policies and practices? - how are we mitigating technological based harassment if our workplace is virtual? - are we bringing in gender equity and safety training and education on days outside of the 16 days of action or international womens day? We are all collectively responsible to recognize, prevent and respond to gender-basded violence in diverse ways within our means. Everyone has a role, everyone can believe survivors. For survivors during this time, I urge you to continue engaging in community care, reach out, you are not alone.

What’s missing is a way to hold governments publicly accountable for making these plans into a reality. Accountability with consequences

The petromasculinities jeering in the comments are worth registering. Hallam is pointing to historical shifts in values that involve reframing seemingly normal behaviours as violent. In most cases, for the global consumer class, decarbonising is a shift in desires that involves new pleasures and not sacrifices. But the 'violence' with which many of these commentators react to the suggestion that making sacrifices, even just occasional, will help respond to a situation of great urgency, tells you the mindsets that collective action must overcome.
