#WorldChildrensDay was first established in 1954 as Universal Children's Day and is celebrated on 20 November each year to promote international togetherness, awareness among children worldwide, and improving children's welfare. November 20th is an important date as it is the date in 1959 when the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child. It is also the date in 1989 when the UN General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Since 1990, World Children's Day also marks the anniversary of the date that the UN General Assembly adopted both the Declaration and the Convention on children's rights. Over the years, the United Nations Security Council has recognized the importance of bringing visibility to the most vulnerable children, by requesting the Secretary-General to report annually on the six grave violations affecting children in armed conflict, namely recruitment and use, killing and maiming, sexual violence, abduction, attacks on schools and hospitals, and denial of humanitarian access. In 2022 alone, the United Nations verified 27,180 violations affecting 18,890 children which were committed in 24 situations and one regional arrangement. The most prevalent violation of 2022 was the killing and maiming of children, while the number of attacks on schools and hospitals showed an unprecedented increase of 112% compared to the previous year. As sobering as the 2022 figures were, they felt pale when contrasted with the dramatic increase in violations against children during 2023. World Children's Day offers each of us an inspirational entry-point to advocate, promote and celebrate children's rights, translating into dialogues and actions that will build a better world for children.
With their lives at stake, children have the right to be heard, to have their ideas taken seriously, and to be included in decisions that will impact their future. On Wednesday’s World Children's Day and every day, join UNICEF in ensuring children are safe, protected, and heard. https://lnkd.in/gz8Gva2

👶 Happy World Children’s Day! 👧 Today, we celebrate the incredible joy, potential, and dreams of children everywhere! 🌍✨ World Children’s Day is a perfect reminder of why we must invest in our youngest generation and ensure they have the best opportunities to grow, learn, and thrive. 📚💪 Did you know? ➡️ Over 2.2 billion children around the world are under the age of 18, representing a significant part of our global population! 🌍 ➡️ UNICEF works in 190 countries to support children and their rights, focusing on areas like education, health, and child protection. 🌟 ➡️ Since 1990, global child mortality rates have decreased by more than 50% thanks to improved healthcare and education. 📉 At ZeroPact, we do our contribution by promoting carbon projects that unequivocally are not involved in child labor, and ultimately ensure their rights and well-being 💚 #WorldChildrensDay #UNICEF #ChildrensRights #FutureLeaders #MakeADifference

For the first time in history, governments from around the world gathered for a Global Ministerial Conference on Ending Violence against Children in Bogota, Colombia. From 6 to 8 November 2024 (via satellite and main events), UNICEF and partners prioritized three advocacy asks. These are the three accelerators that promise the greatest impact (based on evidence) by addressing the major protective factors for children. -Universal access to quality parent and caregiver support. -Universal access to safe and enabling school environments. -Response and support services for children who need them. Excited to see these included in several pledges made by Member States, and many thanks to the hosts of this conference - Government of Colombia, Government of Sweden, WHO, UNICEF, UN Secretary General’s Special Representative on Violence Against Children - and the many partners and children from around the world who participated! Together, we can build a world where every child is safe, seen and cared for. #EndViolence

🌍 Celebrating UNICEF's Impact on Child Well-being Globally 🌍 As a global leader in child advocacy, UNICEF continues to make remarkable strides in improving the lives of children across the world. From ensuring access to education, healthcare, and protection, UNICEF's impact is undeniable. Here are just a few statistics to appreciate their work: UNICEF is present in 190+ countries and territories, ensuring every child has the opportunity to thrive. In 2022, UNICEF helped provide 23.8 million children with formal or non-formal education, including early childhood education. The organization has contributed to vaccinating 45% of the world's children, helping prevent millions of deaths every year. UNICEF responded to 482 humanitarian crises globally in 2022, providing essential aid to children and families in need. Their commitment to the well-being of every child is truly inspiring. Too many children are growing up in a world where basic needs like nutrition and physical activity remain out of reach. What if we could change the story? Imagine a future where children not only survive but thrive - in a world where they are safe, healthy, and free to dream. 🤸 Through our partnership with UNICEF, we are working to make this vision a reality. 🤝 Since 2019, we have focused on strengthening policies and driving local action to create healthier environments for children. This means helping them grow up in a world where access to nutritious food, safe places to grow, and opportunities to learn and play are the norm - not the exception. In the last 5 years we have focused our efforts in Mexico, Colombia, Brazil and Indonesia, where more than 2.7 million children have already experienced our direct programme activities. On this #WorldChildrensDay, let’s remember that creating a better future for children is not just hope – it's a responsibility we all share. At UNICEF Evaluation, we believe in the power of knowledge, transparency, and open access. That’s why all our evaluations are available to the public on our website, offering insights into the results we've achieved to improve the lives of children worldwide. I’ve had the privilege of working with Newcastle University and my team to create an interactive map 🗺️ that allows you to explore these evaluations by area of focus, country, and other key criteria. The map highlights areas where we have a strong knowledge base on outcomes and areas where further evaluations could be beneficial. Explore our open-access map and discover how we use data to drive impact! #Impact #Transparency #OpenAccess #Evaluation #UNICEF #ForEveryChild

Today approximately 25 countries and territories allow some form of voting to adolescents 16-17 years old. The Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) recognizes the child’s right to express his or her views freely in “all matters affecting the child” (...) (article 12) - though does not specifically mention the right to vote. Adolescents have cognitive ability to make informed decisions. Adolescents are passionate about the critical challenges facing them and our societies. Possibly, they are more informed and committed than adults. Critically, they expect prompt and tangible responses, which some countries have not been able to deliver. UNICEF has been active in creating participatory processes for children and adolescents to contribute to take informed decisions on aspects that affect their communities and societies. But only when chilren and adolescents will be allowed to vote, politicians will feel the need to start offering solutions for their problems. Should Children Vote? My opinion: yes, absolutely.
