I had a chance to attend the first day of the Calcalist כלכליסט conference… and I must admit, the vibrant energy in the room, the presence of so many #founders, #VCs, and international attendees (including those who flew in from Israel) energized me Despite the challenging time in the Startup Nation, the resilience and rational optimism expressed by the attendees was palpable The conference was a testament to the resilience of the Israeli tech ecosystem, especially the active tech community in New York As I navigated the conference, I was reminded of how much I used to love attending networking events in New York. But with age, the need to maximize time becomes increasingly evident. I found that the most beneficial approach was to be 100% focused, particularly when engaging in conversations Here are three tips I found helpful as I’m trying to be more intentional and present in my interactions these days: 1️⃣ Be 100% focused when talking to people. It's challenging, but the rewards are worth it (trust me, I know, I can be a very distracted person) … but the other party knows when you’re not listening 2️⃣ Follow up promptly. After every interaction, I made it a point to reach out with a simple message… it's a small gesture, but it goes a long way in building relationships. Also, I don’t take it personally when I don’t get a response… many people just don’t follow-up, or even respond 3️⃣ Embrace serendipity and cultivate long-term relationships. These take time, but the investment is worthwhile. We all know opportunities don’t happen on their own, but as a result of trust building which only happens over time (you’d think this is common sense, but it’s worth repeating) Nothing groundbreaking here, but small things sometimes make all the difference As I’ll be attending SXSW later this week (if you’re in Austin, lets connect), I'm reminded of the importance of these relationships. I admit, I could have focused more on this in the past. But, it's never too late to start CTech by Calcalist #startupnation #newyorkcity #israelinnovation

Well, well, well (and alright, alright alright) wouldn't you know it is already another Wednesday and here we are with the Boston New Technology (BNT) Roundup of events happening in and around the BNT ecosystem...and there is, suffice it to say, a lot happening. Tomorrow alone brings me back to pre-COVID startup times when we all had to make decisions on what of the 7 or 8 different events we were going to attend -- and as Jason Kraus can attest, some of us (that's me, Phil Kasiecki knows as well) tried to go to them all. I wouldn't recommend it haha. That said let's dive right into things and first get you updated on what BNT is doing over the next few weeks. 1.) Precision Pitch Practice is officially back on November 7th, with the latest upgrade to the program currently underway. 2.) Tomorrow you can join Philip Tellis over at Akamai Technologies for BNT's first Web Performance event under his leadership --- lots will be learned, and pizza will be served (event link in the comments). 3.) One of my absolute favourite BNT sessions, our Town Hall series, is back on the 30th. This one is super important as we'll be talking the "drydock period" in November that'll take us through January, and we'll be looking forward to hearing from the community on what's most urgent and interesting out there. Now for the big news that I have been trying to keep under wraps for as long as possible. BNT has a new ecosystem partner which Prepare 4 VC has enjoyed for a while -- led by the incomparable Edith Wangare Njage, MSc and her team of incredible professionals, Arielle for Africa LTD and BNT have something truly special to share with everyone that is happening November 13th -- The Abundance Showcase (otherwise known as The Abundance Summit), a one hour event starting at 10:00AM EST/18:00 EAT which features: 10 fantastical ventures -- 5 from the Arielle For Africa Network and 5 from BNT, handpicked to showcase impact and demonstrate the resiliency and opportunity of our markets now in mutual collaboration. Born Global Community's Boston Chapter is also getting in on the action. I want to thank folks like Marisa Nieves, Victoria Yampolsky, Irina Sychov and others who are already helping by spreading the word and contributing valuable insights. This event, while virtual, will accomplish connecting and contributing with value in a way that really fulfills the whole mission of BNT, period. In the days ahead we'll be spotlighting some of the founders, teasing you with more information about what to expect, and simply celebrating the fact that we're doing something with folks who are all about inclusion, inspiration, education, and empowerment as well. I feel the same about Goldcast and am shouting out Shivika Mishra and team as always -- since it only took me about an hour to put the entire event together....that is unreal. That's all for this week. We'll be back next Wednesday with another edition.

When I returned to #Winnipeg, I was looking for ways to meet new people and get involved in the tech scene. That's how I met Robert at a local event, and he introduced me to Tech Thursday. I loved it so much that I decided to organise our own event while I’m in town and before I head back home to Sweden. On Thursday, March 28th at the Launch Coworking Space Exchange location, we're kicking off at 16:30. This isn’t just another networking event; it’s a chance to connect in a whole new way. Our Panelists (But Think Different): Joanne Zuk - from just outside Winnipeg, Joanne has been using her skills in strategy, consulting, and negotiation to connect people for years. She's all about creating meaningful connections. Robert de Guzman - Rob’s move from Manila to Winnipeg showed him the power of a strong network. Working in HVAC, he’s excited to share how networking has fuelled his growth. Michelle Boivin - With her background in communication and events, Michelle is an expert at engaging audiences. She’s focused on rebuilding her network and ready to share valuable tips. Me: Originally from Winnipeg, I’m here to change the way we think about networking. It’s all about meaningful interactions, and I’ve got some ideas to share. Not Just Another Panel: This event will be more like a Clubhouse session – an engaging, open conversation where everyone’s invited to participate. It’s laid back, it’s interactive, and it’s where real connections happen. Why You Should Join: ITS FREE with Pizza and Beer! Thanks Neo Financial and Paul Card and Philippe Burns for coordinating! Be Part of the Conversation: This is your chance to engage directly with this crew and the community. Share your thoughts, ask questions, and get insights in real-time. Networking Made Natural: Forget stiff, formal networking. This style makes meeting people easy, fun, and genuine. Learn and Grow: Whether you’re looking to expand your network, find new opportunities, or just want to meet like-minded people, there’s something here for you. Secure Your Spot: Ready for an evening of insightful conversation and genuine connections? Grab your free ticket now: https://lnkd.in/dXdzpDbV Let’s make networking fun and meaningful together. Hugs in Business 🤗 I noticed much hugging last night at the Home Grown Club event, a side event to London Tech Week, moderated by TechCrunch. Highlights were promising: 💡M&A is looking better than the past 18 months. 💰 Plenty of money to be deployed But some uncertainties appear more politically driven: ❌ HNW individuals with interests in the UK and the US have moved away from the UK. 🕵Hiring talent post-Brexit is challenging vs. Paris’s AI hub (Mistral/Facebook). The club's mood was that of people who knew each other well, hence the hugs. Two hours well invested, where I had decent discussions with: Isaac Twidale 🕺 who runs a marketing agency focused on high-end hospitality. Callum Coombes Uni → Software Developer → Funded CEO with a product that fits the toothbrush model 🪥 Asha Easton waving the Innovate UK and imemrsive tech flag Cynthia C. and colleague Ash manage multiple family office investments globally. My networking metric is ‘2 high-quality, longer conversations’. I got six, demonstrating the quality and value of this specific network. So, I might be there for future hugs, too, as there was a Full House at Home. 🏠

Lessons from "The Letter from the Cathedral of Milan" by Billy Shore I've been reflecting on Billy Shore’s "Letter from the Cathedral of Milan," and the lessons from this piece have really resonated with me, particularly in terms of the impact of community on building professional relationships. One of the key takeaways from Shore’s reflection on the Milan Cathedral is the incredible power of collective effort. The cathedral wasn’t just built by architects and masons; it was a true community project. Everyone from nobles to bakers contributed their skills and resources, knowing they might not live to see its completion. This long-term commitment to a shared goal is something that deeply touched my heart. As a medical laboratory professional, startup entrepreneur, and now a virtual assistant, I've come to realize that the same principles apply to building professional networks. Just as the Milan Cathedral was built on the foundations of those who came before, our careers are built on the strength of the communities we’re part of. Every connection, collaboration, and shared insight lays the groundwork for something greater, something that lasts. My Core Lessons Learned: ✅Community is essential: Success in our careers and businesses comes from pooling diverse strengths. Whether it’s seeking advice, offering support, or partnering on a project, we grow together. ✅. Long-term vision matters: Building meaningful professional relationships, like cathedrals, takes time. We might not see immediate results, but investing in our communities creates a lasting legacy. ✅Contributions of all kinds count: Just as weavers and fishermen contributed to the cathedral, in our professional lives, every skill, every effort, and every shared resource has value. Billy Shore's letter reminded me that “THE GREATEST ACHIEVEMENTS ARE THOSE THAT UNITE US”. It’s a mindset I’ll carry forward as I continue to build and nurture professional relationships in the fields of laboratory diagnostics, entrepreneurship, and virtual assistance. A question for the #VC community - what makes an event valuable to you? 💹 In organising more events for #VCs, #LPs, and #Angels, I'm getting one particular piece of feedback: connecting with *each other* 🤔 And it makes total sense! It's not often the #investor community gets to connect together, meet new folks they could co-invest with, and potential LPs. Access to the network can be challenging to find the time for. So I've been testing this out by creating more value for the investor community - after all, I can't serve tech founders if tech *investors* aren't supported too. Namely, I've been supporting and seeing interest in 👇 🤝 Vasily Alekseenko's Investor Conference, a Demo Day on April 22nd focused on connecting investor together with 500 investors expected and 10% of them being LPs 👋 - seems to be getting a lot of people interested because of the key stakeholders (and so many of them) in the room. Link in comments if folks are interested in learning more. 🥗 At Colorintech I'm organising some LP/GP dinners, and some other more intimate chances for key stakeholders and more advances, vetted dealflow to connect. Again, people are getting excited but it's kept mostly private. (DM me if you're an investor or LP and interested in learning more). 😩 At more public events, investors would always be a small(ish) segment of the community, because the ratio of founders who want money to those able to give it are so skewed. Is this everyone's experience, and what's the solution? These more intentional things seem to be it, but let me know your thoughts in the comments. 👇 For investors and operators out there, what's worked for you? 🚀 Exciting times are coming up. But it's also a challenging time for our ecosystem. If anyone wants to get involved or any more interest in the above, please let me know! 🧐 Let's share best practices and make this ecosystem more active ✨
