Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said Thursday that he hoped the Trump administration would maintain the agency’s AI Safety and Security Board, which was formed in April and includes corporate and civil society leaders focused on artificial intelligence. The board’s roster currently includes OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, leading AI researcher Fei-Fei Li, and Office of Science and Technology Policy Director Arati Prabhakar, among many others. DHS and the board on Thursday released what the department is calling a groundbreaking new framework focused on technology and critical infrastructure. https://lnkd.in/eNGZWtdS

A terrific day at the Financial Review AI Summit yesterday, listening to some excellent speakers (including our very own Valeska Bloch!) and engaging with clients and colleagues about all things AI. A few key insights to share: 🔷 Ed Husic, Minister for Industry and Science - The goal is for AI to complement human behaviour and do more of the dirty, dangerous and drudgery, however an existing hand break is the distrust across the community. We also can't forget that the digital revolution is not all about AI – automation and robotics present significant opportunities also. 🔷Yossi Matias, VP & GM, Google Research, Google - Quantum computing will turbocharge what is possible with AI - unlocking opportunities that would not otherwise be possible. Google's published AI principles provide a good reference point for organisations in the process of developing or refining their own AI guardrails. 🔷Matt Comyn, CEO, CBA - The focus is currently on experimentation, putting in place the foundations required to get the best out of AI and establishing robust guardrails. We need to balance the hype of what's possible in the near term with the potential long-term opportunities - pragmatism is key. "You can't go from the horse and buggy to the Tesla in one step". The potential impact to jobs is unlikely to be large in the near term, but longer term there will undoubtedly be a 'reshaping' - however it's too early to conclude and extrapolate. 🔷Stela Solar, Director, National AI Centre - Current adoption of AI in Australia has been measured at 29%, compared with 42% global average (recent IBM report). Supporting our people at all levels to build their capability will be essential. 🔷Adam Driussi, CEO, Quantium - Three important foundational elements to enable organisations to leverage AI to its maximum advantage - (i) having your data in good shape; (ii) robust technology to analyse that data; and (iii)skilled people. "Like a formula one car - we can all drive but we’re not all fit to drive a formula one car." 🔷Stephen King, Productivity Commission - New rules and regulation sound great - but they can create confusion and uncertainty. If there is already regulation and laws that are in place that can be leveraged, then these should be the starting point. 🔷Aurelie Jacquet, Director, Ethical AI Consulting - We need to uplift the awareness and capabilities of everyone in the system - from the board, to the people developing it, the people in risk management, to the people on the front line deploying it with customers. We can't have verticals working in isolation. 🔷Adam Bennett, Group Executive, Technology & Operations, Suncorp Group - For business leaders, you can't look at this opportunity as something that the technology team is going to solve for you. It has to be whole of company, whole of strategy, whole of organisation capability uplift. A broader, enterprise mindset is needed.
‘Looking abroad even just in the past couple of weeks there’s been an enormous number of regimes that have been introduced, and each jurisdiction is taking a slightly different approach. There's very broad extraterritorial reach as well. So even if you're an organisation in Australia deploying or developing AI, you potentially need to look not just across all of the regimes in Australia, but globally as well.’ Great to hear from head of cyber Valeska Bloch and fellow panellists Stephen King (Productivity Commission), Bran Black (Business Council of Australia) and Aurelie Jacquet at today’s The Australian Financial Review AI summit. We’re proud to have been a platinum sponsor. Find out more about our work in AI: https://lnkd.in/gU3UaMRm

Today, I had the opportunity to attend the European Commission's event with my colleague Jens-Joris Decorte, alongside other organizations that have signed the EU AI Pact, organized by the EU AI Office. It was inspiring to be among such established organizations, and I'm proud that we at TechWolf were able to be part of it. Next up: Defining AI governance and exploring how it can integrate with existing security governance frameworks like ISO27001 (or a more practical SOC2) and the emerging ISO42001. How will these standards interact with the requirements of the EU AI Act to create a comprehensive approach to AI governance? Exciting times ahead!
