Enthusiastic Maress users and other companies in the offshore ecosystem met this week for the Maress #Sustainability Partnership (MSP) Event in Bergen. The participants shared decarb experiences and best practises💡e.g on how to best utilize a vessel with LNG-hybrid battery installation; trends seen by banks and insurers on data needs and decarb targets; the regulatory complexities on FuelEU and how digital tools and advisory services can make life easier; monitoring and optimizing the engine utilisation and efficiency gain in Maress. 💰🌿 The #Maress #MRV Reporting Module was launched, and the demo was well received. The new module supports automated data feed to DNV, Normec Verifavia and other accredited verifiers. On 7 May, we presented the final results of the low ILUC-risk pilot project for the European Commission and launched the certification guidance.   Low ILUC-risk stands for low indirect land use and is introduced in the Delegated Regulation (EU) 2019/807 and explained in the REDII (EU) 2018/2001. Fuels produced from feedstocks considered high ILUC-risk are capped at the 2019 consumption level and need to be phased out by 2030, unless they can be certified as low ILUC-risk. Meaning that they can demonstrate they are produced from ‘additional biomass’ through yield increase on an existing farm or through new cultivation on unused, abandoned or severely degraded land.   We developed the certification guidance, auditor checklist and management template which can be adopted by voluntary schemes to certify low ILUC-risk biofuels under the REDII. A very rare type of dual fuelled ship has entered service. One that runs on Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG). And the Aquamarine Progress happens to be just such a vessel. "The dual-fuel vessel can run on either LPG or conventional heavy oil, and when LPG is used as fuel, CO2 emissions can be reduced by about 20% and sulfur oxides (SOx,) particulate matter (PM), and so on. by about 90% compared to heavy oil. In addition, the specifications allow for the transport of ammonia as well as LPG. Ammonia, which emits no carbon dioxide during combustion, is expected to increase in demand in the future as a next-generation clean energy source." LPG as a shipping fuel, has trailed in uptake, compared to LNG or even methanol. It will thus be interesting to see how it will pan out with more alternatives coming on line. 𝐔𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐥 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬, 𝐌𝐀𝐌𝐈𝐈 𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐬 MAMII has issued a report warning that without a unified system for measuring methane emissions from vessels, progress on cutting emissions will be slowed. The maritime methane group calls for the creation of globally standardised measurement and monitoring frameworks, and the creation of technology-centric regulatory frameworks incentivising the development and adoption of methane abatement technologies. Led by SafetyTech Accelerator since 2022, MAMII was established to address methane emissions from ships using LNG as fuel. The initiative aims to reduce the environmental impact of LNG by reducing methane slip to near zero.
