🚀 The EU AI Act, effective from August 1, 2024, is here to reshape AI regulation, emphasizing consumer rights and safety. Here's the scoop: 🔹 Minimal Risk: 📨 Recommender systems, spam filters, etc. 🔹 Transparency Required: 🤖 Chatbots, AI-generated content with labels (biometric, emotion recognition, synthetic media). 🔹 High Risk: 🏦 Lending, recruiting, and other "customer decisioning" apps. 🔹 Unacceptable Risk: 🚫 Banned if infringing on human rights or free will. 📅 Timeline: Prohibitions for unacceptable risk: 6 months General-Purpose AI governance rules: 12 months Full AI system regulations: 36 months (by August 2, 2026) 🛠️ The AI Act will be enforced by the Commission’s AI Office, with help from the European AI Board and an advisory forum. The AI Pact helps global AI developers transition smoothly. ⚖️ Non-compliance? Fines up to 7% of global turnover for banned apps, 3% for other violations, and 1.5% for incorrect information. #AI #Regulation #AIPact

Corporate interests and consumer interests have traditionally been at odds when it comes to environmental regulations. While all involved parties may agree on sustainability and safety goals, achieving them and keeping in line with business goals is harder in reality. But that no longer has to be the case. It really does feel like you're pissing on people's chips when you point out the impact on the environment of AI. I know it's an uncomfortable truth, but I'm sorry publishers, you don't get to talk about sustainability one minute and then ignore it the next. My personal view is every conversation about AI should have ethics and the impact on the environment at their core. 'The proliferating data centres that house AI servers produce electronic waste. They are large consumers of water, which is becoming scarce in many places. They rely on critical minerals and rare elements, which are often mined unsustainably.
